hello,
i currently have a 1 gallon jug with mead that is just finishing fermenting. It's about 3/4 full. I also have a bucket with about 5.5 gallons of mead that is also just finishing fermenting. My plan is to rack to bulk of the bucket into a 5 gallon carboy for clearing and then racking the last bit into the gallon jug to top it off. Then cold crash the gallon jug to clear faster. They were the same starting gravity and fermented in about the same time frame. Is this reasonable to do?
Thanks in advance,
Grad

Yes, you really should fill that gallon jug to within an inch or so from the top to help prevent oxidation. After fermentation is complete, you want to eliminate as much air space as possible.
I don't do a lot of wines or mead, but when I do, I save 1 qt. in the fridge for top-off purposes every time I rack.
