Is there a too long for a batch to be in a fermentation bucket before racking or bottling??

I never took an Og reading. So I don't no where my FG should be. That's why I ask

FG is an estimate dependent upon a lot of variables so don't stress too much if you didn't get your OG. At the homebrew scale you don't have to worry about too much as far as yeast autolysis so you can leave the beer on the yeast for a month with no worries, some people say much longer.

You're good for a few weeks without having issues. Best thing you can do know is take gravity readings 3 days apart, if it doesn't change fermentation is complete.

Excellent.

Do I take the reading right in the bucket?

You can as long as you can see the hydrometer at the level needed for a reading... No way I could do that with 5.10 gal beer in a 6.8gal ferm bucket down inside my ferm chamber.

Many use a beer thief.. if you have a large hole and stopper in the lid for the air lock, pop out the air lock and drop in the sanitized thief (keep it off the bottom)

If your hydrometer fits in the thief, drop it in and take a reading.. Otherwise a small test cylinder is useful.

No beer thief.. no hole in the bucket? pop the lid off, use a sanitized cup to dip in and get some beer.
