Tonight's Drinking

I don't think I'll be able to brew tonight, so I picked up a few to drink:

1. Brother Thelonius
2. Scaldi Noel
3. Gouden Caroulis Grand Cru
4. Decadance Imperial IPA

I'm starting with the Bro Theolius. It's good. An American Abbey-Style beer. Tastes a lot like my Lazy Monk brew (but I liked mine a little better). Good caramel, chocolate, tobacco and leathery notes to it. Not bad at all.

I almost bought the other Scaldi, the $42 bottle. The guy working there told me to try the Noel first, then come back for the big-boy.

I'm drinking a Mapfelwein... or should I say, drank an Mapfelwein - a big bomber of it! It's delicious, but holy **** is it SWEET!!

I followed that off with one of Snakebone's IPA's - I needed some hops too ofset the sweet. Now, I'm drinking a Guiness. I think I'll follow this up with a Hoegaarden or one of those ones with the black lab on the label that Rhoobarb brought over last time.

Did I mention that Mapfelwein is STRONG

I'm drinking Stone's Ruination IPA. Holy crap is it good! I've never been much of an IPA fan before but I decided to get two of the best one's (at least according to a buddy who loves it). On deck is a Dogfish Head 90 Min IPA next. I think I'll be a hop head by the end of the evening. SWMBO is off to her monthly card game gathering tonight so I can drink beer and play video games for the evening!

Edit: This Dogfish Head is even better than the Stone's Ruination! I think I may try this one next assuming the 7/7/7 thing doesn't get going by next weekend!

A pint of my London Black, then a Snow Plow milk stout from Widmer.

Bush Prestige (Scaldis Prestige), had it once. I'm very glad I didn't pay for it. The alcohol was the main flavor. Even an ounce sample was more than I wanted, but I don't like big Belgians much.

Im drinking my first kegged brew, A fairly hoppy Pale Ale (about 40 IBU's). This kicks a$$. No bottles to rinse out, no inconsistant carbonation, the best investment I have made since I started brewing again. Im also drinking a couple bottles of Scape Goat, a Pale Ale from Big Sky brewing. Trying to compare the two, and having fun doing it!

I be drinking a wonderful porter I made and another porter I made and a Duval the wife picked up. I haven't had the Duval yet. I hope I like it

First, a couple of Legend Browns, a Richmond, Va brown ale. Now following with my own Oatmeal stout. This stuff is liquid breakfast....absolutely delicious. I can't brew it fast enough.

Ok, gayboys- I just got back from the bar where we were drinking Sprecher's Special Amber on tap. Not bad for a Northwoods area where most people drink BMC and like it. I am now having some of my own Maibock- and it's good!

So, Cheese, I've never heard of those beers. Could you post a mini-review when you sample them? I'd definitely try them when I come out of the Northwoods.

Weirdness in Ize house tonight...

While at work I ran out to get SWMBO's birthday presents, and, of course, stopped by the "bigger, better, beverage store, Friar Tuck" to get some DME and grab something completely different...

I was astounded to see some Bell's on the shelves. (The manager told me her stockboys suck, and she had moved them from storage back out to stock...)

Regardless...

I didn't realize this brew was created in '05 according to Bell's website ( www.bellsbeer.com ) Because when I cracked one when we got home from dinner it foamed like a <insert descriptive adjective here>

I mean a glassfull of foam. It took forever to settle down. It was the Wheat 6 Ale. Ingrids below from the Bell's website....

Wheat Six
Wheats: White, Dark, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied, Red, Caramel
Yeast: WLP500 Trappist, WLP530 Abbey, Wheat Four blend

It's not bad, not great but not awful for an almost 2 year old beer apparently.

Now drinking Lagunita's Brown Sugga' which according to the label has an OG of 1.100, an ABV of 9.9%, and an I.B.U. of 51.1.

Did I mention it's really good?

I tried the Gouden and the Decadance the other night.

Decadence Imperial IPA: Only way I can describe it is "The Malt-lover's IPA". Really shallow on the hoppiness. Almost no hop aroma. Dude, you would hate this.

Gouden's Grand Cru: I was excited about this one. The bottle states that they only brew it once per year, on Feb 24th. As it were, it was Feb 24th when I opened it so it was one year old. I always remembered Grand Cru as being thin, light, sweet and fragrant. I must be wrong, because this was like a barleywine with a little orange and coriander thrown in. Thick, heavy malty notes with a bit of orange. No hop detection. Color was deep brown. Very little head or carbonation.

These two brews got me lit up, but they weren't worth their price tag. The Cru might need another year to age.

La Fin du Monde--drool. That's my current fave.

I'm going to be brewing a tripel soon, shooting for a similar profile.

That is a good one to shoot for. Personally, it is worth what you pay for in terms of quality. I have not been disappointed with Unibroue.

Yeah this side of the pond, it is head and shoulders with the Trappist brews imo. Speaking of this side of the pond...I seriously need to get back to Ommegang and get some more cases of their stuff as well.
