I believe those first cans were zinc-steel. Talk about aftertaste after a few weeks or months aging. Aluminum cans used today are quite an improvement.
 
I remember when beer was first switching to aluminum & it became possible to crush a can against your head. Some people were faked out by steel cans with aluminum tops.
