I just brewed a Widmer W-10 Pitch Black Clone. The recipe called for:
1.5 lbs Caramel Malt (10L)
12oz Weyerman Dehusked Carafa II Malt (450L)
10oz Briess Special Roast Malt (50L)
I went to my LHBS and gave the employee my list and got the following:
1 lbs Crystal Malt (10L)
1 lbs Chocolate Malt German Debittered Dehusked (400L)
1 lbs Briess Special Roast Malt (50L)
Without thinking I assumed what he gave me was exactly what I needed. My fault for assuming. This is my first non-kit brew so I have been used to having the exact measurements for the ingredients. I crushed the grains at the LHBS and added them together in one bag. It was not until I was steeping the grains that I realized my mistake.
All-in-all I had 2oz more grains than what the recipe called for.
Any thoughts on how this will turn out? Also, the recipe called for an OG of 1.064 and my reading came out at 1.082. This is a 5 gallon recipe and I had 5 gallons in the fermenter.
Bad mistakes on my part but I guess you can't learn unless you make a mistake. Repeated mistakes are when you are in trouble.
