This is probably going to start a riot but...

Actually both Yooper and I have said there's nothing wrong with using ice in your fermenter to cool AS LONG AS you're not using commercial ice from the typical ice dispenser at the local gas station or quickie mart, where the bags are often ripped or have drain holes in them and I've seen candy wrappers, cig butts and god nose what else in the bottom of them (For vintage base ball tourneys where we live at a historical village for an entire weekend with no referigeration I have on occassion bought out and entire places supply and emptied the cooler out to the bottom, and was surprised at the crap down in there.)

Making your own ice is preferable if you take basic sanitization precautions.

Yes I recall and

welcome to the 5% :mug:

I've always cleaned out whatever I need to clean the day before (or during brew day, after use) and keep a tray with star san to sanitize whatever will get in contact with the wort after the boil. Seems to be doing great for me.

Anyone use oxyclean? I have seen it in use at a few micro-breweries, think it might be a cheaper solution than PBW but not sure about that...

I can guarantee you that we do NOT have a "sterilization" forum on our site! It's sanitation, and not sterilization. That's a very important distinction. Sterilization is a whole different ballgame than sanitation, as I was trying to point out earlier.

Yeah I agree, I flubbed on sanitation/sterilization when I said "I contend that sterilization is not as important as proper sanitation" I meant to say that proper cleansing of surfaces (hot water, soap and elbow grease) is probably more crucial than sanitizing with chemical agents. My mistake on that account. Didn't mean to start a riot...

That's a cleanser, and it is probably the cheapest and most popular homebrewer cleaner on here, probably more of us use that, even the dollar store generic, than pbw.

There's tons of threads on it on here. It's even talked about in our sticky What Sanitisers and Cleaners are used.

That is a helpful thread, never though about mixing bleach and vinegar together...do you know what proportions and duration to use for oxyclean? I didn't see any mention of that initially

For oxyclean? There's not really a fix amount. People usually just tend to dump a scoopful or whatever in and add hot water and let whatdvdr soak for anywhere from an hour to over night. It's really just about preference more than anything else.

Just be mindful of the warning to not mix undiluted bleach with vinegar...unless you are wanting to wake up dead.
