People like and dislike sports for different reasons. I don't like basketball but don't really have a good reason why.
I find soccer extremely physically impressive and I like the continuous nature of the games.
It isn't that American's don't understand it, they just don't grasp it. The same people who will love to watch a baseball game will claim that the sport is too slow. The same people who claim it is too low scoring will revel in a 7-0 football game as a defensive battle. It is more misunderstanding than anything. Soccer has a stigma in the US as a pansy sport that fairies play. It is hard to be a macho Bud guzzling sports idiot and say you like soccer. That is why it isn't popular. That is slowly fading, but soccer will never enjoy in the US what it does nearly everywhere else.
Our cheers suck. In comparison to the rest of the world we are far and away the least interesting fans. That's just a fact. It doesn't make us dumb, it just makes us look that way.
