People like and dislike sports for different reasons. I don't like basketball but don't really have a good reason why.

I find soccer extremely physically impressive and I like the continuous nature of the games.

It isn't that American's don't understand it, they just don't grasp it. The same people who will love to watch a baseball game will claim that the sport is too slow. The same people who claim it is too low scoring will revel in a 7-0 football game as a defensive battle. It is more misunderstanding than anything. Soccer has a stigma in the US as a pansy sport that fairies play. It is hard to be a macho Bud guzzling sports idiot and say you like soccer. That is why it isn't popular. That is slowly fading, but soccer will never enjoy in the US what it does nearly everywhere else.

Our cheers suck. In comparison to the rest of the world we are far and away the least interesting fans. That's just a fact. It doesn't make us dumb, it just makes us look that way.

It's funny, because Americans seem to accept fatness as being manly. A short, thin soccer player (even if muscular and athletic) isn't a real man. But an obese offensive lineman is okay. The rest of the world doesn't see it that way.

Yup! I remember years ago some guy telling me that a football player can weigh 300 pounds and run a million yards in something like half a second.......But yeah, he only has to do that once a week! ;)

There is no doubt that soccer players are amazing physical specimens. But NFL football players are the pinnacle of athletic freaks of nature. They are by far (in my mind) the most physically outlandish (excepting perhaps sumo). Those 300+ pounds are super fast and have huge vertical leaps (many of them). They are amazing athletes, even the huge ones. I am not going to knock football.

But soccer athletes are also very impressive and play a completely different game. Maybe America likes football so much because we are the only ones who are good at it.

Meatyportion... that song would be perfect, I've heard it suggested before :D Do you really think you could get hundreds of people to even yell "F**K" in public, let alone "Lick my butt and suck on my balls"?

EDIT: Wow, that was super delayed. I was talking about the Team America theme... That's what I get for trying to reply without hitting the refresh button on my browser (HBT is pretty much always up)

Tell that to the Canadians.:tank:

When was “Ice Hockey” invented remains a matter of debate but it is believed that it was invented in the mid 1850’s by British soldiers staying in Nova Scotia, Canada. They used a rubber ball initially to play the first ice hockey game with some basic rules.

:mug:

I'm amazed at how many of the non-soccer people I know are paying attention to the WC.
I noticed that too. Part of it is the whole drama happening in this year's World Cup, like the goals being taken away from our team by bad referees or the way the French behaved like a bunch of old spoiled prima-donnas.
And I also think if we do well this year then soccer will finally become a main-stream sport in the US. I hope so, because I'm tired of falling to sleep during a 12-hour baseball game.

you soccer fans are being elitist - ish again.

NFL football is king for a reason

Why come in to a soccer thread to plug football, If you're secure in that belief, why feel the need to push it? Let us "elitists" discuss the game that us and the rest of the world enjoys without the harassment.

I would die laughing if it gets sung at a WC game.

That is a filthy, tea sucking rumor.

Sounds like you're being the elitist...

NFL football is king only in the United States for a reason
There, fixed it for ya :D

So, getting back to what this thread was originally intended for (read: soccer), did anybody watch the games today? I was really pushing for Switzerland but they couldn't make anything happen. I feel they should have more points considering they got a complete crap red-card on a Chilean acting job. Oh well though, CAN'T WAIT FOR TOMORROW!!!

Yay finally joined. So is there no way of predicting it a tie? On fifa.com predictor game you can call ties, considering the final score would be something like "GER-ENG 1:1(0:0) - PSO 5:4." That was actually going to be my prediction ^_^
