Made the run up to Madison yesterday for bottles of Cherry Meerts and Framzwartije from Funk Factory

and hung out for about an hour and shot the **** with levifunk while drinking the beautiful Blackberry Meerts that will be released in a couple of weeks.

Good stuff for a 5 hour round trip whirlwind yesterday afternoon / evening.

Sounds like next week's NG R&D release will be a wild ale with red wine grapes. Presumably Champ du Blanc, but red wine grapes. Champ du Rouge?

Champ du Blanc was made with Chardonnay juice - not grapes. Pommier was made the same way, but apple juice. Subtle but important (IMO) difference.

Agree on Pommier Savage, but the label for Champ specifically says grapes.

Apple label says the same, however I know that I read somewhere though that they used juice. The even mentioned the ratio - 2/3 juice to 1/3 sour blonde base and then allowed to ferment for several months. I'll have to do a bit of digging to see if I can find the source.

I stand corrected. That's some dedication on your part.

While both Champ and Pommier was very good, I don't think they were as good as some other fruited stuff where he's used real fruit. Presumably the bottle yield is a lot higher when just using juice?

Didn't take me too long to find, the interview stuck in my mind as I really enjoyed Champ du Blanc. Definitely the most wine-like beer I've ever tried - which makes sense given it's two-thirds grape juice.

Assuming it was anywhere near pure juice (not containing all the pulp, skins and seeds) they would definitely have gotten a higher bottle yield than using whole or mashed grapes.

Per The Book Face today:

The third and final R&D release of 2017, will be September 22 & 23, the same weekend as Oktoberfest in the Village of New Glarus. This release will be Champ Rouge, a fruited sour that was spontaneously fermented in our coolship and blended with New York Rougeon grapes. The winter of 2016 gave Champ Rouge a long slow fermentation.

The R&D release will be Friday and Saturday,September 22 & 23rd. The release will begin at 10 a.m.! Bottles are $15 each, with a limit of two bottles per person per day.! Remember your valid Drivers License, it is required and is non negotiable. Finally, there will be food, LaFortuna wood fired pizza will be serving up their delicious pizzas in the courtyard!

Has anyone been to Oktoberfest in NG?

It's my wife and I's anniversary but we are currently in the process of buying a house that we are gut rehabbing so instead of going on a proper trip to celebrate, we are looking for something fun and nearby to do (and cheap).

Hotels are mostly sold out and super expensive, but we'd be willing to camp. I guess I'm just wondering if it a big, fun, raucous time or if it is pretty tame and laid back? We went to Oktoberfest in Munich for part of our honeymoon.

I don't blame them either, but I am still sad about it. It's less of an event for me now, and more of a chore to drive the 3 hours for two bottles. Especially as I know they have released previous R&Ds at the bottle shop. I can certainly see myself not going to the less exciting ones (sour porter, wild bitter) and I wonder how it affects attendance.

I know the confrontation from earlier in the year was the straw that broke the camel's back and maybe this was coming anyway, but still, **** those two dudes for speeding it up.

Skipping Zwanze?

Unfortunately it appears that way for another year. Moving offices on Thursday and Friday and don't think I'll be able to make it up to Madison after work on Friday before the 8pm pickup deadline for Funk Factory. Couple that with my ma's 60th birthday event at Imperial Oak on Sunday, and knowing I'm always moving a little slower after a Zwanze Day, it is probably for the best.

This was very good. Not sure I'd sing quite as high praise as the 'ol Subby Doo, and I frankly don't remember which Framthings I've had and which I haven't, so I'm drawing a blank on comparisons. I'd prolly pass on a second one given the price relative to the other Framhosies available at the tap room.

If you said this was the best fruited lambic-esque beer to come out of WI since VSB, I prolly wouldn't fight you.

So New Glarus was a weird experience for me today. First time I haven't been there before 9 am since 2011. Rolled up at 4 and the palce was packed with people who could care less about a R&D beer (probably always been like this, but I've never been there that late).

There were 4 to 5 pallets of Champ Rouge in the depot. Almost a full pallet of every other R&D, except Champ Blanc, which was a half pallet. Was there Friday and I would guess they are refilling the R&Ds.

They didn't scan my id and seemed not too concerned about double dippers. Probably a product of being there so late. Could have bought everything straight from the depot.

I'd guess champ rouge will be at the depot for days, if not weeks. I'd further speculate this signals a change in policy and R&Ds and they will keep them out after release weekend. No need to ever show up early, and I'd speculate there may be no need to show up on release weekend. I guess we'll see if that is confirmed in the coming days.

levifunk was pretty slammed yesterday when we got there around 1pm, so I didn't ask him the mechanics of how he is allocating taproom bottles.

However, funkyaudio and myself got a bottle of Framzwartije around 1:15 or so and it was pulled off the on sight list shortly after that.

Blood, Sweat and Unicorn Tears was a nice treat as well, and the Blackberry Meerts is fantastic and looking forward to drinking that one sooner rather than later. Another solid release day at Funk Factory, even if it the weather was way too ******* hot for September 23rd.

This. Another reason why New Glarus is my favorite and best brewery in the US. I stopped showing up before 10:30am on R&D release days in probably 2015. No lines, no waiting, you can literally be in and out in 2 minutes, and I've never had an issue with bottles not being there (GTMW weekend excluded).
