Can anybody recommend like an intermediate trail starting at or in the general vicinity of Trapp Family Lodge? Nothing too crazy, just something that gives me an excuse to walk around outside for awhile in between drinking and stuffing my face.

When are you going?

I'll be there from April 6-9, but will probably have time for a hike on April 8th.

When we were up there last year we were warned that's mud season. Hopefully one of the locals can give you a better report

I wouldn't plan on doing much hiking...it is likely going to be very, very muddy still, especially at elevation.

I had mud halfway up my radiator, 2+" thick after driving on dirt roads last week and the real thaw hasn't even begun.

The Stowe Recreation Path seems fairly low altitude, reasonably scenic, and I'm seeing it specifically recommended for hiking during mud season. Plus, there's a parking lot fairly close to Trapp, so I think that covers all of my bases.

Thoughts?

The Stowe rec path is paved and more akin to a walk than a hike. It is easily accessible from many locations.

There are tons of trails on the Trapp property but those are what I was referring to with regards to mud.

Ah, I got you. Yeah I would have preferred a legit hike, but because of the mud I'll have to settle for a scenic stroll.

I also have a question about cheese acquisition. I saw this the other day, and got excited:

They said it should be out in early April. Anybody have a rec on a cheese shop likely to stock this?

only places I've gotten my cheese from are Hunger Mt Coop, Cabot Annex, and Willey's

Fwiw that cheese will be sent to retail shops outside of VT. I know Boston will be getting some. You might have some luck at your local Whole Foods, if they typically carry JH.

If Im travelling in late April (last weekend) yall think the mud will still be an issue?

driving? doubtful if you are just going to HF
hiking? more likely

really depends on the weather the next few weeks and how warm it is/isn't.

Ya was more referring to the hiking. Wife and I would like to get out and do some cool hikes. I guess I should buy some good hiking boots....

Uber isn't a thing in/around Waterbury, right? I have a reservation for Hen of the Wood this weekend and want to make sure we get there/back safely.

If it isn't, can anybody rec a cab company?

If you're staying at the Old Stagecoach Inn, it's about a 15 minute walk each way, which wasn't bad at all. That's what we ended up doing during our trip.

So I have a choice to make. Old Stagecoach is booked up. If yall had to choose would you suggest an Airbnb apartment right in Waterbury, Airbnb house a bit outside but maybe closers to hiking (with firepit and hot tub), or a B&B in Stowe closers to HF and other hiking areas?

Anybody familiar with corkage fees in VT?

From what I can tell, only places without liquor licences can BYOB.

Is that still accurate?

Any more info on that?

Best Western. And although I'm not afraid of the walk, I am lazy and would rather just get a cab. Plus the weather is supposed to be pretty crummy this weekend.

I've used Stowe Taxi - 802-253-9490

TIL people get cabs to go 1,750 ft.

I actually didn't realize it was that close.

Nevertheless, with crappy weather and drinking (and a girlfriend that has no interest in walking any distance in the wind and rain and cold) ahead of me this weekend, I'd rather be over prepared than under prepared.

we did the same one night.. the roads were so icy we surfed down the big hill... but none of us wanted to try walking back up that hill after dinner and drinks so we called a taxi

when I was young and naive, I'm pretty sure this was the taxi that a driver said that my brother and I "HAD" to try a shot of vodka dropped into a Heady. So either he was trolling me hard, or he was a raging alcoholic because I tried it when I got home....... woooooooof.

::sigh:: the good ol' days...
