The THING Movie(both of 'em)

The 1980's the THING is one of my favorite movies ever.

Absolutely perfect.

The Prequel was well done. My only complaint would be that they did less of the suspense and more "Creature Feature" traditional monster flick.

What was so great about the 1982 one (Why the EFF are they both named the same THING?) was the thermal underwear in the trash, the figure running through the dark, simple non special effect suspense building.

I give credit to the 2011 one for not hitting you over the head with cgi, but it still made the various creature incarnations run around chasing people. Stuff that wouldn't have happened in the 1982 film.

I haven't seen the 2011 version, but I completely agree on the '82. Great suspense building coupled with (maybe exaggerated by) the feeling of isolation and knowing that something is nearby...was that just a shadow?

The THING is worth watching.......no....the other one.....no.....well....they ar both worth watching, lol.

I think you will be pleased with the 2011 one, hope I didn't ruin it!

I dig the 80's version. Just the simple fact that it wasn't a monster flick where a monster hides in the shadows to grab people then hides again was awesome. Also the part with the defibrilator was downright scare the crap out of you goodness. Haven't watched the new one.

EXACTLY! It is a fine line to be sure, but I would say that the 1982 movie was an awesomely done SUSPENSE movie with a creature, while the 2011 was a suspensefully done Creature Feature.

I must admit, being a big 1982 'Thing' fan, that I was not even excited to see the newer one released, but was actually pleasantly surprised when I saw it. I really enjoyed how both ended up being tied together...

John Carpenter's version is one of my all time faves, the "prequel"/new remake was way too similar to the '82version honestly that i see it as a remake .. they pretty much copied it to a T. they left the part during the credits to make it appear that it was leading into the next film, that was the difference.

This is crazy to see this thread. The Thing IS my favorite movie of all time. I watch it every year when it gets really cold out. Such a perfect movie. Maybe it's a homebrewer thing to love this movie?

I disagree with the 2011 being a "remake". The pre-quel was a prequel......you can't very well bust out in a whole new way (like Aliens after Alien for example) when you have to be so loyal to the 1982 movie, and then end up at that movie's beginning, which wa by far the most AWESOME part for me.

In fact, if the 2011 version had gone in a crazy direction, I would be on here cursing the writers and director.

It was different enough. The discovery of fillings, earrings, etc. was a cool twist.

You beat me to it. 1982's The Thing was actually a remake. However, it is by far my favorite horror/monster flick. I turned my sons onto it and had to explain to them that there was no CGI back in 1982. Those were some groundbreaking special effects. Great movie!

Oh.....and I remember some critic called John Carpenter the "pornographer" of horror flicks after it was released. What a wimp!

I don't really recall much of the slasher horror films from back then, and I am no fan of them now that I am much older.

I do like some of Rob Zombie's music though. Who doesn't like More Human Than Human?

I like White Zombie's album pretty well, Rob diverted more into death-techno (did I make that up?) on his solo stuff. Living Dead Girl and More Human than hu-man come to mind as pretty effing good.

Just watched 3000 miles to vegas partly because Kurt Russel is THE MAN. lol. He was good, Costner not so much, the flick was good until Ice T showed up and then it turned into a wholesale crapola ridiculous action movie.

The plot is actually interesting, the emphasis is on suspense over cheap scares, the acting is surprisingly good, the gore is freaky but not over the top, and the whole film feels actually believable. The term "horror movie" has always had bad connotations for me, but the Thing was a legitimately well-done movie. It sure scared the $#!t out of me when I was a kid.

It blew every other '80s horror flick right out of the water (and is better than most modern entries to boot).

I haven't seen the new one yet, but after reading this thread I might have to.

You sound like me! I would not classify the 1982 as a "Creature Flick" it is a suspenseful movie with a creature.

Unfortunately I have spoiled it and built it up too much, but had you not read this thread and watched the 2011 movie, the end credits would almost make you wasnt to stand and cheer. The movie up to that point is worthy, but the tie in to the "original" is flawless.

Actually, compared to a lot of metal purists he's pretty open minded. There are lots of little sub-genres and niches within metal and plenty of metal heads who think anything outside of their narrow definition is heresy.

I love horror movies and have never seen The Thing, so thanks for bringing it to my attention. Next movie night with my wife I will be watching it. I do agree Rob Zombie's Halloween was way better than the original. I enjoyed House of a Thousand Corpses a lot too, not crazy about the sequel though.

I disagree there, I thought the way he built up Michael's character was superbly done. And the Halloween night sequence when he finally snapped was eerily realistic to me.

It is fantastic though. It lacked the slightly supernatural bent of Dr SATAN, but was AWESOME. The last scene driving into a hail of bullets was the best ending possible.

It's been a while, but the one time I saw it I just remember waiting for the movie to descend into nightmarish, sadistic weirdness like the first one, and then being disappointed when nothing ridiculously over-the-top happened.

Of course I preferred his Halloween remake to the original because Michael seemed like a real person and everything felt more realistic and believable, so maybe that's more of what he was going for with Devil's Rejects. I think expectations play a huge role in enjoyment.

Speaking of horror movie remakes, The Evil Dead (I and II) has always been at the top of the list of my favorite movies, and I was dubious about a remake without Bruce Campbell or Sam Raimi, but I thought it lived up to the name. It was definitely a very different movie, and didn't have the humor, but I thought some of the essence of the original was there. And I got a thrill out of it that is rare for a jaded horror fan like me.

They are two very different movies for sure. There were some really tense moments in the second film, not that there weren't int the first, but I think some of those hotel room scenes in Rejects are right up there with the best ever suspense wise, Hitchcock included.
