I'm not there and remodeling a house so not watching much football. Plus those dick bag owners are going to LA. I hate LA.
Is that for sure now or are they still using it as leverage to get a new stadium in San Diego?

Nothing is for sure. I've heard some pretty crazy stuff but the issue in SD is where would you put a new stadium. The current site is owned by the water department and per state law that land can only change hands at fair market value. So no deals can be worked to gift the property in exchange for infrastructure etc... the team at one point attempted to have the parcel designated as blighted but it failed. The 2nd issue with the parcel is there is a nearby tank farm that was leaking and there is a huge gas/diesel plume underground. If you break ground for construction state law says the pollution must be remediated. That tank farm goes back to WWII. No one wants to deal with that issue and it'd be mired in court forever. So existing site is out.

They want to build downtown but it would involve a lot of acquisition of land and relocating some public infrastructure, including a bus depot and maintenence yard. Not the biggest deal but there is a lot of bad blood from when Petco Park was built. A downtown stadium is proposed but under the min seating requirements to host a Super Bowl. After that, there just isn't the space in central San Diego.

The owners see the $$$ up in LA and if they can work a deal with the Raideas they'll go. Unknown if fans will support them. San Diego is a very transient population so most fans will just revert back to their teams from their hometowns. A collaboration with raiders would also invoke a division realignment since 2 teams sharing a stadium can't be in the same division.

I don't see them staying given what I know. I have no interest in supporting the LA Chargers. But I have a lot of fond memories of 6hr tailgates with the best food, beer and people at that old crap stadium.

Going to be in Austin (actually just outside the city at some property a buddy is using as his compound for the wedding) from Friday morning till Sunday evening.

Wedding is on Saturday, but what else do you guys recommend an out of towner who really wants to drink his fill of Live Oak over the weekend hits up on Friday afternoon / Saturday morning / Sunday morning afternoon?

Brunch spots / beer bars / breweries would all be appreciated.

Cheers!

Define: "outside Austin". North or South? That's a big area.

Live Oak is pretty easy to come by... Hefe is kinda ubiquitous to most bars serving draft in the city.

Also: what beer are you bringing me? ;)

Staying at 319 Addie Roy Road in Austin. Also found out tonight my buddy is getting a keg of Live Oak Hefeweizen I hope to kill most of on Saturday night.

I'm planning on bringing a Vanilla Rye and a Oude Kriek Vielle from Oud Berseel at a minimum on the off chance I see any TX TB folks in my travels.

Have a car which makes life easier.

You are pretty close to oasis texas brewing. They have a really cool spot on the lake and make some good beer also. Jester king isn't prob 20-25 minutes from you also.

Downtown area I would recommend hops and grain on 5th and calles. They always have some cool small batch stuff on and are open every day. Zilker brewing is near there also and is brand new but I enjoyed the beers when I was there. If you are heading more north would definitely recommend a stop at Austin beer works. I think their wet hop ipa is due out soon and it's my favorite of their rotating ipa series.

Beer bars hit Rainey street for craft pride and bangers. Craft pride has 50 all texas taps and has a pizza truck out back and bangers has 100 taps and great brunch also. Most places on Rainey that aren't strictly bars do brunch as well. A little bit more north on 45th street are draughthouse and pinthouse pizza, both with great beer options. Pinthouse does food also and draughthouse usually has a food truck.

Bottle shops closest to you are probably east 1st grocery and whichcraft. Jester king also sells a bunch of different bottles to go.

Texas craft brewers fest is this Saturday and texas has a home game also so traffic will be worse than normal just fyi.

Yeah... it's good to mention to Out of Towners that Jester King has a large amount of their bottles for sale AND bottles from other breweries in Texas and abroad. Their selection is actually MASSIVE. Here's last weeks' for example (this week should come out Thursday)

For anyone in Austin I have 2 tickets to the UT game this weekend, north endzone touchdown club section. Food provided, liquor for purchase, Zoe and Lawnmower beer options. Parking pass near Frank Erin center also. PM me if interested.

FWIW, My loser out of town friends and I have had good luck a couple times contacting JK by email and asking to stop by during the week (outside public open hours) to purchase a couple bottles.

Very cool people.

The only caveat is that ElkSherpa will make you clean out the mash tun if you come outside normal hours.

There's one like 6 posts down in the Southwest forum. Gawd.

If you're gonna be here next weekend, there's actually a 50-75% chance of an Aurelian Lure release at Jester King.

100% if it rains.
Traveling to Austin, TX next week. Do you guys have a requisite tourist thread/link?

Thanks!
Jester King opens Friday @ 4PM I think? Sometimes earlier for special releases at 12PM

I may come down next weekend for Aurelian if it drops. cyde. Hopefully I get that sweet new job this week or early next. That'll be easier to have an excuse to swing a bender weekend. I would shuttle back and forth all weekend between Jester King, Pieous, and Ramen Tat-suya. And hopefully have one of those insanely fun Austin bottle shares.

After their last attempt at getting a kickstarter handout, looks like the guys at Deep Ellum have turned to the next best thing: Indiegogo, where they'll get to keep all monies raised even if their goal isn't met. So far DEBC and John Reardon have already raised over $12k that, you know, might end up being used to fight TABC.

To be clear, perhaps this lawsuit will end in victory for Deep Ellum. Also to be clear, the last lawsuit that a brewer brought against TABC was not successful, and, furthermore, led to the lawmakers in the most free-market-friendly legislature in Texas history feeling put off, such that no progress was made last session. Here's hoping the same doesn't happen this time, after all, some shakeup is certainly needed. The idea of dock sales is such an important one, and such a valuable one, that I certainly hope this ends in victory.

But I won't pretend to be surprised that Deep Ellum is seeking for customers to pay for the right for Deep Ellum to sell more to customers.

Does DE make more than 10k bbls a year? Is there any way that's a thing?

Because if not, they could just switch to a brewpub license, still distro & sell on-site and stop crying like little babies about the big ol' mean TABC.

What's Deep Elum suing over? The right to sell direct to the public?
The injustice in question is the unfair and unconstitutional laws that prohibit microbreweries from selling their products on-site for off-premise consumption. You see, Texas allows every other alcoholic beverage manufacturer to do just that – wineries, distilleries, and even brewpubs are allowed to sell their products directly to the end consumer for off-premise consumption. Microbreweries cannot.

The Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution requires that government treat similarly situated persons the same, or precludes it from treating one set of persons differently than others who are similarly situated. In other words, beverage laws in Texas must treat all businesses similarly situated alike. How are wineries, distilleries, or even brewpubs - making exactly the same products as a microbrewery - any different? What state interest is being served? How is this prohibition against microbreweries protecting the welfare, health, peace, temperance, or safety of the people of Texas? Long story short, it isn’t.

Oh yeah, equal protection... let's invoke that for alcohol. Let's have set pricing for distributors and allocation of beer while we're at it (so all the limited release beer is sitting out in the boonies somewhere and all the beer is more expensive) so everything can be equal, lol.

For the record, distilleries can sell 2 bottles of liquor to you directly per month.

Makes me happy I stopped buying their stuff a while ago.

Looking over that Deep Ellum lawsuit page I find it hilarious that they donated $10k of the $12k raised (scroll down to the "Lead Plaintiff & Chairman" "reward").

Way to put a couple bucks in the tip jar you clit bumps.

I don't know the whole story but on principal I agree with them. If wine can be sold direct then beer should have the same right. When this happens and breweries can profit more directly you'll see more businesses opening. The ones contesting it are BMC to be anti competitive. Pisses me off when I'm at a brewery and ido like to take something to go and can't. This is one reason CA and CO and OR are beer meccas and TX isn't.
