I wonder if this applies to whiskey as well:

What are the points about and how can they get used?
The Spec's Key points are really an in-house tool for us when it comes to the distribution of allocated wines. We receive several highly sought-after wines each year in very limited quantities. We needed a way to insure that our everyday, loyal customer got first chance to acquire these wines over the customer who would shop with us only when allocated wines were released. Now when a limited-quantity wine comes in, we run a report based on Key points. The customers with the highest points are called first.
It separates the "good" customers from the "bad" customers.

Hey, at least you're not supporting the Armenian mafia like you'd be doing at Twin Liquors, amirite? Amirite?

i think women spend more money @ specs then men. they buy wine by the push carts.
Sir BusinessSloth, you need yourself a rich cougar...one that drives an S-Class mercedes.
Don't entirely disagree with this, just with the women part. My dad and uncle are winos and I would be scared to know how much they spend at specs each month...

Relevant story: Here in Houston some Sea Smoke landed at a central market. I knew my uncle loved it so I told him they had a case in. He later sends me a picture of 6 bottles. Pretty sure those run $100 a bottle or something stupid..

Wine people can buy beer people under the table any day of the week.

Anyone doing anything fun tonight? We're gonna hit up Banger's and Craft Pride with our pooch and maybe a party afterwards (ugh).

I started early with a Bloody Mary at District 7 grill.

I think whiskey people can outspend wine people all day long ;)

Going to see The Afghan Whigs (my favorite band) at The Mohawk tonight. My son is sleeping at a buddy's house so we'll see where the night takes us after that.

I got the impression that it was going to close friends, and if by miracle there was anything left over, it would probably be for something like this. Only problem is even though I frequent Specs and spend a considerable amount of money (probably close to ~$2000-2500 a year), my spending can't touch what others spend there.

On Saturday I was at Spec's (in town for the weekend so I gotta pick up stuff I've missed) and I went to check out behind two gentlemen buying three cases of wine.

We like to think, as I did carrying my $100+ bounty of beer, that we are special at these liquor stores. We stand in lines and spend too much on too many beers.

But in all our spending, not one of us has come close to the $167,000+ that these two gentlemen dropped on those three boxes of wine. One hundred sixty seven thousand dollars.

WTF. SRS? Now I want to know what kind of wine costs $167,000 for 3 cases. Every time you take a sip, I hope Mila Kunis appears with sparks shooting out her vag and you make a love explosion in your pants.

I just... What??? Wouldn't that put the bottles at like $5k each? I've seen single bottles for that much before, but what the **** wine costs that much and is available enough to buy 3 cases?

Christ on a cracker. I will never spend that much on beer in my life.

That $2,000 bottle of Dave seems pretty stupid now. They could have bought three cases of it.

House is on the market and just waiting for it to sell. Could be awhile if we get stuck in the holiday slowdown trend.

I'll be back in Houston for Thanksgiving. If there's a bottle share somewhere I can bring San Diego goodies (including growlers). But I cannot host.

Cross posting this from the whiskey thread.

Called Specs Downtown.

Me: "Do y'all have any BTAC available?"

Rep: "No sir"

Me: "Ok. Is there a list that I need to sign up for in the future or something?"

Rep: "Not at this time. That is an allocated item that the owner of specs will be handing out."

Hand to God if I ever win the state lottery, I will start my own liquor store just to compete with these ********. I knew in my heart that these wouldn't even hit the shelves. The owners and managers have a proven buddy system where only close friends get the rarer bottles.
Which are you looking for? There might be stores in Dallas that fly under the radar.

I know the most expensive booze bottle I've seen at Spec's was a bottle of congnac at Downtown Houston: $26.000.

Imagine if you were an employee and dropped those 3 cases of wine.... I imagine the rabbit pulls out a gun and shoots you.

How is the new Oasis beer, apparently it's wine barrel aged Baltic Porter? Sounds like something to check out.
But in cans the aging potential might be much lower.

Double it - these were six bottle cases. One of the cases was over $60k, so $10k per bottle whaaaa.
I got a Specs key thing in late 2012 and whenever I tried using it the clerk said there was no point to. I've never been asked to use it, in fact I've never seen anyone use one.
Other stores like Office Max, BevMo, etc. push these things and ask if you have a membership/card/tag, etc. Am I missing something?

There's certain Specs Key deals that it's worth having for... almost never for beer, but I use mine a lot for booze (which is the only thing I buy there since the beer manager at Specs Brodie is a huge ****)

For instance Jim Beam 8yr Bourbon was $25 for 1.75L 2 weeks back or $8 or so off w/ Specs Key.

I haven't tried any of their beers yet-- anything worth checking out? I do like the art on the new beer:

I personally really liked it. The wine barrel is subtle, but it definitely adds some complexity and the roast is great. I had never had any of their beers before this, and I was very impressed. I bought some last night and I'm going to seek out some more today if I have time. $7.36 for a 4-pack at Spec's is a pretty amazing deal for 4 16oz cans of yummy barrel-aged beer IMO. Contrast that with that ridiculous Twisted X Senor Viejo that will sit on shelves forever at $16.99 for a 22oz bomber.

This beer is so disruptive to the local market with its' pricing... I love it! I bought 2 4-packs at $8.99 apiece on my way home and I thought THAT was insane.

As far as the beer? It's actually damn good. I think they struck a good balance between the base and barrel myself.

I keep trying to find people that've tried Señor Viejo and failing, btw. They really screwed the pooch with that one.
