My BBQ recommendation is based on how rar the ticks they bring to share.

1. In-distro beers that are bad that I've already tried? They get sent to the Salt Lick for the Driest Brisket In Town
2. Out of distro beers that are bad? Rudy's (which is really great for a chain and my standard comparison...if it's not worth the waiting in line or extra $ or driving time, it's not worth it)
3. Out of distro beers that are good? La BBQ or Stiles Switch
4. Rar Walez? Franklin, Valentina's, Kerlin

Stiles Switch is my go-to place for BBQ. They're one of the few places I'll get pulled pork as well as they do it really really well. They also have "exotic meats" week around Christmas where they'll have different game animals daily.

And since Steve invoked Dazed & Confused with his post, Stiles Switch was actually the Emporium Pool Hall from that movie.

Speaking of Top Notch Burger... don't sleep on the fried chicken there. It's far better than the burgers. Maybe the best in town.

S&S have the best beef ribs in town.

Barks for Beers participating breweries seems smaller this year? Price went up and noticed some east side breweries aren't participating, no Lazarus, Hops & Grain, Zilker.
These guys rubbed some people the wrong way last year for sure.

I know a brewery that declined the participate last year that still made it onto the punch card. They ended up not selling the glasses, but honoring the punches.

They are not on the list this year, so there's 1, lol.

I'm going to be in Dallas/Garland for work next week, where should I check out?

Prepare to be underwhelmed.

In the Garland area your options are Lakewood Brewing which is fairly standard local brewery and Intrinsic Smokehouse which is BBQ and beer. Haven't had any of their beers but it's probably very average. Lakewood's Temptress variants are the best pastry stout-ish beers in the area if that's your thing.

Elsewhere in Dallas, Peticolas does some good beers. I avoid the other breweries around town. For bars Dots is go-to for casual. Craft and Growler isn't bad. Meddlesome Moth for a more upscale and .rar beer selection.

Hello Texas brethren!

In the year of our Lord, 2018, from May 7th to 9th will we will in the DFW area and then in Austin until the 12th.

I am looking for recommendations of all kinds! Food, beer, **** to do, etc. Obviously we will be going to JK and Live Oak but other than that, we are open save for a Tigers game on Tuesday. Also, let's touch tips!

Thanks for your help Texans!

Where in DFW will you be and how much traffic do you want to endure?

In Arlington near the stadium there are a few breweries that IMO make lousy beers. There's a small place in that area called On-Tap that has a good but small list if you want to stay pretty close. There's a World of Beer location in south Arlington if you're staying in that area. Arlington is suburban af so chain everything that way. The baseball stadium is right by Six Flags if you want to hit a theme park.

In need of honest opinions.

I am not a huge hop head, but I will gladly buy and drink the good stuff when it is around. I have yet to try anything from Turning Point. Is it worth driving to Bedford from Dallas on a regular basis? Or is it mostly local hype of a "hip" style?

For reference, I seem to find myself in Boston once a year and always visit Trillium when I am there. Likewise I buy up M-43 when I go home to Michigan to visit family. I like hops, just not enough to chase them down in trades/trade partners. When I was in for a week this summer, I drank my weight in Edward, Mary, Heady, and Focal.

Also to take into consideration, Small Brewpub has started bottling very small amounts. They haven't advertised it widely, but I am about to blow their secret. They are routinely bottling Black Pepper Pils, Underdog IPA, and Oak Cliff Ale. They are selling 500ml bottles for around around $5 a pop. I live less that 2 miles from them and can always walk in there and grab a glass of I Cant Share You (the passionfruit sour) and a few bottles with no wait or hassle on the way home from work.

Stopped by Turning Point last Friday after work to check out the brewery and grab some pours. I live in Oak Cliff but work in Flower Mound, so it was a slight detour for me on the way home. Like you, I'm not a huge hop head, so I doubt I will be going out and standing in any release lines for cans once they get up and running routinely.

Overall, I'd say it is nice to have them as an option in the DFW area for your haze fix. I wasn't blown away by anything, but to me, most of these hazy/NEIPA flavor profiles all kind of taste the same as of late.

Good to know about Small Brewpub bottles. We should meet up sometime.

I guess it depends on how badly you want that haze. IMO their beers are not particularly great to the style. Mouthfeel is off and they are too bitter for the style. The hop flavor is generic to the style but nothing stands out. I definitely wouldn't rush out to get them but I'm also not huge on IPAs. I know people locally are talking about how they are equal to Trillium or Tradehouse but not even close.

That said, they are new and hopefully will continue to improve. I'm rooting for their success although they don't brew styles I drink too much, if only because I grew up right over there and my office is on the other end of Bedford. It would be nice to have a decent brewery in the area.

More or less how I feel about that style and those breweries. There's the few exceptionally awesome ones from specific regions, but as far as whats available locally or around Texas only? Ehh.... Point of reference for the local stuff in my case would include Spindletap, Red Horn, Hops and Grain, or Pinthouse... blindfold me and I couldn't tell any of that apart honestly.

Not sure if i already said it in here, but RABC Axis is now my favorite TX IPA.

Love when HEB/CM discounts the Axis cans, noticed that's been a more frequent buy for me as well. Have hardly drank Yellow Rose lately and generally speaking, I am focused way more on pilsners.

I saw they’re doing Axis 12 packs now, too. Gonna have to grab a couple of those on my next trip.

Just when you think TABC couldn’t be any more ridiculous...

The salaries of 12 officers doesn't seem like it would be worth it to me.

Let's do some math.

I don't know what a TABC officer makes, but let's low-ball at $40,000.... that's $9,230.76 per week.

At 8.25% state liquor tax to make that back would be $111,888.00 per week worth of booze. At 25 flights that's $4475.52/flight.

Why Austin though?! We hardly have any international flights compared to Dallas & Houston...

I wonder if they'll try and confiscate Salt Lick's can seamer while they're there, just for ***** and grins.

money used for everything from roads to education
12 officers

If they're gonna go ahead and make ~ ($1068.68) in losses a day trying to milk a few wallets I think they're not gonna have much fun.

Let's see... that's a loss of ($128241.60) over 4 weeks at $250/day coming in. Heh.

Even if they paid minimum wage (I can guarantee they don't) at $7.25/hour that's a loss of ($446.00) a day or ($53520.00) over the 4 week trial.

Good job as always TABC, lol.

That's also just labor! Real cost would be higher. Way higher actually (benefits add sometimes +25% to wages alone).

I just don't think they're ever gonna rake it in on alcohol alone on a cost effective basis. The border makes sense because there's constant traffic.
