SBE had the honor of Peter Zien talk at our meeting last night. Very cool to get his perspective on where the industry is at and what AleSmith is planning. A direct fire 10 barrel system is going to be installed next the 85 barrel system for small batch beers (he promised an open fermented version of ESB since that beer in on the chopping block ). They are planning 8 new beers next year and more beer in cans. He still wants to keep the 750ml format for some of the bigger beers but mentioned they lost SKUs for many of the 750ml bottles which why they are switching the 33cl 4-packs.

117 West Spirits' Spiced Rum and Pier View's Gin are some good spirits being made locally. Pier View's gin is more citrus forward (which I prefer) although they will be coming out with some similar to St. George's Terroir in the future.

Nice, I've been looking for a spiced rum since I've been too lazy to make my own. Thanks for the rec.

Continuing TalkSpirits False Idol has a bunch of cool single barrel versions of rum either already available or coming out soon at Raised by Wolves. The Moscatel barrel Doctor Bird rum is particularly delicious.

Finally walked into Bine and Vine for the first time in months. I know we say it all the time, but holy ****, the sheer scale of great stuff on display the moment you walk in is mindblowing. I've never been less compelled to trade for beer than I am now.

I really enjoy the spiced rum 117 west makes. The rye they made is super chocolate forward as well. Added some strawberry symple syrup and lemon juice to the gin they had and it made a wonderful refreshing cocktail.

I heard both good and bad from bottles and that the bottles don't even compare to the draft that is on up the hill. Having a few bottles brought for us at the softball game tonight so I can finally "try before I buy".

I think it's just been so long that we've seen Nelson in distro that it rekindles some of that magic that we once had. It's never coming back, but we're all still desperately holding onto hope, like that one serious relationship you still haven't gotten over yet.

That was a damn good interview - a far cry from those weird rants Scot used to get into on Facebook. Glad to see he's found peace and the positive side of things. You can't understate the positive impact he's had on our scene.

Thanks! I was worried when he told me about it, but it really came out great. It was a great walk down memory lane for me. 2009 was when I fell in love with beer. Never would have imagined 9 years later, I would be brewing!

The infringement claim seems a little far fetched to me but I’m no lawyer.

I don't practice that kind of law, but the Stone/Keystone litigation seems way more legit. I've been a fan of 3F for years and never known them for the "not normal" phrase. Even if that's a thing, I think it's sufficiently distinct to avoid confusion.

And why would they wait so long to really go after this? I'd argue they waived the issue.
