What’s to crack?
1. Collab with well established brewers who use same hype generating formula

Kyle/Horus is doing a very similar strategy as Abnormal /Moksa / Inu, and I will refer back to SanDiegoJoe2011 's code cracking to fill in the blanks.

Relying on/hyping up collaborations makes sense, but how can anyone else wrap their heads around him doing FIFTY-FIVE collabs in one year? I can't even imagine drinking beers from 55 different breweries in a year, let alone visiting and brewing at 55 different breweries (across the nation) in that time frame (I'm also assuming he had an active hand in developing all those recipes and contributing some of the ingredients?). That might seem more feasible if that's all you did, but again it seems like he was juggling this with a full-time accounting job and family.

Is it possible that he actually knows and is "great friends" with people at all 55 breweries, so much so that they all welcomed and accommodated his request to do a collaboration with them (even though he had zero professional experience)? Was he that well-known/popular across the entire beer industry as a fan/collector/trader/homebrewer?

Or is he using some other strategies to get this much exposure (paying the other breweries? funding all the production costs himself?)? Maybe it's relatively easy to set up collaborative beers with other breweries, even for new brewers, and he is just organized/determined/smart/funded enough to crank out basically a visit+collaboration every week....

obviously his strategy is working, i'm just floored by that near-instant cult status of him and his beers (whether that has been earned/deserved is another discussion) and the level at which he has executed his collaboration-production/marketing plan. Parts of this origin are reminiscent of producers like Mikkeller, Evil Twin, J Wakefield, Abnormal, even Rare Barrel... but really on a much higher level when you consider his utilization of social media during his start-up period.

Hot take

‘18 Roustabout > ‘18 PtY

(Just had both today)

Discuss....

Good to see you for a bit. I disagree though. I love Younger. No shame. I need to revisit Roustabout. I liked it a lot. I got more savory a hop profile from Roust. I liked the more old school hop profile of Younger and how dry it was. I'm a sucker for triple IPAs. Or whatever you want to call them.Hoping Roust is one of the blind ones at Hammy's Sunday. Super stoked on that event. 16+ blind TIPAs.

The complete opposite of your boss.

We are actually brewing three or four hype train beers in the next month. Stay tuned.

It is pretty interesting to see brewers who got in to the beer scene by lining up at Hamilton's and O'Briens for beer events all the sudden have breweries that are more popular than breweries started by the owners of Hamilton's and O'Briens.

He used to be involved with Beer Advocate back in the day so he got to know a ton of people.

My 2cents on several recently discussed topics:

The Horus sale was laughable to me. I’ve loved the few beers I’ve tried from them, but I refuse to feed into hype trains anymore. The low bottle count combined with the insane amount of collaborators. Was it 11 breweries? Even without infection, that sounds like a mess.

Roustabout vs Younger, no thanks to both. I want clean, non-hazebro single IPAs full of hops and flavor, not full of booze & malt. I tried both once this year, and 1 time was enough. Just give more PP cans.

Regarding Abnormal pre vs. post-Derek, the answer is the same I give for Horus. I’m over hype train and rarity. I never tasted anything from them in the glory days that warranted that level of hype. A lot of the hype was fueled by beer traders wanting to profit.

In all cases, I can go to kingg and buy a good-to-amazing beer with relative ease & none of this silly hype train nonsense.

My little Roy is growing up

A margarita is literally four simple ingredients. There's no need to buy mix. Same goes for Pina coladas.

I've been drinking more old fashioneds and Manhattans than anything these days. I'm convinced Blanton's is the perfect bourbon for both.
Blantons is a great bourbon. I made a big mistake introducing Sarah to it.

I like my Blanton’s neat.
Made an old fashioned out of Dickle Rye recently and very happy with the result. I’m thinking Friday night I’ll make an old fash from Dickle and aomething more expensive and do it blind... sounds like fun

4? I’ve always done it with 3: Blanco Tequila (Corzo or Cabo Wabo), Grand Marnier (or Contrieau), & either fresh Lime Juice or Rose’s Sweetened Lime. Equal parts of each.

What’s your 4? And your ratios?

Hey, I’ve been using fresh squeezed limes recently for Mai Tais. Just haven’t made a margarita in a long while. Probably going to buy the ingredients I saw drbenzo use.

By the way, anyone know when Sucaba is arriving in San Diego?!?!?!?!

?!?!?!?!
It hasn't hit Orange County either. FW and their fucky distro is really annoying

That's the good news, the bad news is Crest isn't bringing in the Leo V. Urses Wookus.
