The perfect red

I was wondering if anyone knew which grains and combination there of that makes the perfect red beer, whether it be an ale, pilsner, etc.
My research lead me to believe it was the perfect blend between a crystal malt 40 and roasted barley.
Anyone got any opinions? Would love to hear the input, Thank you ahead of time. :)
 
I don't like Roasted malts in Red/Ambers, as it is easily overdone and will add brown/mahogony hues to the beer. I like a combination of low-medium Crystal malt with a Dark/Very Dark Crystal malt. 40-60L with Special B/W or anything English over 90L.
 
Agreed on the Red-X. It provides a brilliant red.
I've been playing a bit with this malt. 2 step infusion makes a big difference. I target 1.055
Red-X is a blend of several malts, so don't get too fancy with your grain bill.
90% red-x and 10% Salzgitter pilsner makes an excellent ale.
 
I've got a red ale I like to brew that uses the following for malts;
  • Pale Malt - 77.8%
  • Munich Malt - 8.2%
  • Crystal 40 - 7.3%
  • Victory Malt - 3.7%
  • Crystal 75 - 1.8%
  • Midnight Wheat - 1.1%
It ends up with a nice amber/red hue and a solid malt backbone. My recipe is what I would call a NW Red rather than an Irish Red, but it makes a nice beer.
