One of my favorite combinations of hops - Columbus and Simcoe, which goes very well with one of my favorite IPA grain bills. Very piney and dank due to the use of these types of hop varieties.

Over 6.5 ounces in 5 minutes with no bittering hops? Am I reading this correctly?

If I made this I probably shouldn't use my hop bag with this many hops boiling for only 5 minutes. I have an excessive amount of hops and this recipe may work well to dwindle them down.

No whirlpool or hopstand?

I hit the target IBU with the late hop additions. That's how I roll on many of my beer recipes.

I'm going to give this is try with the same hops and hop schedule.

The base grain I'm going to leave the same and will probably swap out the crystal 40 for 10. I don't have any of the wheat or the Caramel Pils so I'll substitute them also. That is if I don't make it to the LHBS.

I don't understand why you boil for 60 minutes if you are only adding hops in the last five minutes. My understanding of the boil is to bring out the bitter properties of your chosen hop. It seems to me that this beer could be boiled for 5 minutes and then chilled.

I believe 5 minutes isn't sufficient to boil off DMS which could cause off flavors.

There is no pilsner malt, so I don't think DMS is an issue. That being said, I could be wrong. I am interested in why not boil for far less than 60 if you don't use a bittering charge at 60.

All malts have some DMS in them, but I believe pilsner malt just has more DMS which is why a 90 minute boil is usually suggested for pilsner malt recipes, but 60 min is recommended for 2-row.

This link says the half-life for DMS is 40 minutes. Even when the boil is over all wort still contains DMS to a degree, it just isn't noticeable with normal boil lengths.

I know that with my BIAB system; I need the extra water to get the efficiency. I already thought about the no need to boil for the entire 60. If I did a sparge I probably wouldn't boil the whole time.

DMS is real- I'd boil it for 60 minutes. Late hops rock. As you were.

Recipe states to boil for 60 mins, as you should even if your only adding hops at 5 mins. This is to remove some dms regardless of base malt.

Brewed this last friday. Had to add some magnum at 60 minutes because my AA's on the Columbus and Simcoe were too low. Added Simcoe and Columbus at 5 minutes though, and substituted Citra for Mosaic. Excited to see how this bad boy turns out, especially since I almost always whirpool my IPAs.

I made a few changes to the adjuncts but just minor ones.

I got 96% attenuation raising my ABV to 6.8%( I scaled down my grain bill to 1054)using 1 1/2 pack of Us 05.

I dryhopped last night on day 17 .
I am extremely pleased with the smoothness and complete lack of alcohol hottness.

Juicy is a great description so far.will start my cold crash probably tonight and let it go for 3-4 days.

It was remarkably clear. I will post my actual changes after its carbed and I can give a better write up. I may enter this in a local competition.

Thanks.

This one will be next up for me also. Like the Citra dry hop addition. Looks pretty tasty.

One thing about the numbers confused me. It says boil gravity is 1050 and after boil 1064.
14 point gain??? Is that even possible?

Getting ready to brew this recipe on Saturday. Any water specs to think about, or is it just RO?

Thought about modifying the process, but decided to stay true to the formula. We'll see how it goes. Looking forward to this IPA.

mine has been at 30psi since Wed. night.

I know what im doing when I get home from work today....

:D

Dry hopped today. FG was close at 1.010. A lot closer than I was with OG, which was 1.060. Nice Amber color, and the taste is juicy grapefruit. And now That I have temp control for fermentation, no more funny after taste. This is going to be a great beer, only question now is how long do I cold crash this baby.

Really interesting hop Schedule.
instead of staggering additions you've essentially dumped every single hop you could've layered through the boil.
if nothing else is efficient. lol.

but in all seriousness i have wondered about the effectiveness of loadingyou late additions so much, and thought about doing it.

I was a little skeptical too, but decided to go with it. Found out that both flavor and bitterness could be achieved using this method. Had a bitter addition been added early on, it may have been too bitter with the late additions. Works out nicely. Will definitely do a re-brew.

3 weeks in, and this brew is awesome. Reminds me of Pliny. Thanks for the recipe Remmy.

Absolutely, I'll take the recipe. And the 14.2% if available. Thanks bro, and ouch, something just kicked me in the rear. :(

I think I try this recipe.
By the way what is the price of hops in your country?
In Sweden is kind of expensive.

How did the Columbus/Simcoe Ipa that you drinking turned out??
No dry hop in the recipe ? tasty anyway?
I going to brew on saturday and I will probably brew recipe nr:3

Here's my attempt, love the color and clarity. Mine was lacking in the aroma department so might try a hop stand when I make it again. Nice classic, solid recipe, thanks @Remmy
