Just found this thread. Its sweet to combine two things I love, brewing beer and watching soccer. Sometimes at the same time! Subscribed. Also, SOUNDERS TILL I DIE! I'll be screaming my face off at home tonight watching the Seattle vs. Dallas game.

Welcome to the thread! :D It's a pleasure to have a soccer thread like this that hasn't been trolled to death. I must admit though that because of the way soccer is regarded by most in the US that I feel sometimes that I have stumbled across a secret gay thread and that I have always been in the closet. ;)

No one thinks you're in the closet. You've been outed, Gnomey!

;)

Did you play for any club or highschool team in Vegas? If so, we might have played against each other once or twice. I played for Premeir and Green Valley HS.

Grrrr PREMIEEEEEERRR!! I ****ing hated you guys! :D

Went to highschool from 2000-2004 and played on Genesis FC (still have the jersey :D) from 1996(7?) - 2001. We lost in the State Cup finals two years in a row to damn Premier '85.... both matches were pretty damn close to IIRC.

Does anyone know something about Atlanta getting an MLS team? With all the crap about the Thrashers lately, there have been some rumors.

Yeah, I played for Neusport and GVFC clubs in junior high and early on in highschool, and I never liked Premeir. But later on in highschool I wanted to get looks from colleges, so I joined Premeir '83 bc they gave me the best chance of playing and competing in big tournaments.

It's been in the rumor pool for a while and Garber has indicated interest in getting a club in the south. But a lot of movement has been in Vegas... I don't think it would work there but I would love to support of Nevada club.

Ooooh yeah Neusport, forgot about that club. Good stuff, always a challenge. Which is GVFC? Is that a youth club in Green Valley? Either way, I remember there was always big competition between Genesis, Premier and Neusport.

Yeah GVFC was a club put together by the Green Valley HS coach to keep most of the GVHS guys playing together year round. I played for them my freshman and sophomore years, then our highschool coach lost his job/got transfered and the club disbanded.

Ah, too bad. My HS club did the same thing to keep everybody but with indoor soccer. Really good and competitive league at the indoor park on Vegas and Rampart. We took the title 4 times before the core group graduated and it kinda faded away. And I racked up the most penalty time each season :D :D :D (yellow card = 2 min in the box; red card = 5 min in the box) Well, I was tied one season when there was a German exchange student at our school who played for us!

I'd think Vegas would be an interesting choice for an expansion team. There are plenty of teams fairly close to them to stir up some rivalry. A team in Atlanta would probably benefit from another expansion team forming out of the south at the same time. That way they aren't all alone down there. Perhaps New Orleans.

I actually heard about a proposal to build a soccer specific stadium on the southern end of the strip(there's a lot of open desert south of the Mandalay Bay). Obviously there would be the goal of bringing in an MLS team if this happened. The population in the LV valley is ~2 million, which seems big enough to support a franchise. LV has a pretty large soccer community these days, as well as large immigrant and Hispanic communities that enjoy soccer. One of the biggest reasons I think a MLS(or any pro sports) team could work in LV is that the city is a huge draw for out of town fans. If you are a season ticket holder for your local team, or even just a casual fan, and you want to go to one away game each year, why not make it a Vegas trip also?

That being said, Vegas is different than most cities. The abundance of entertainment here would cause a lot of competition for any sports team. The casinos don't like anything coming to town that will cause people to spend less time with them. Also Vegas is a strange town for family dynamics. Being a 24/7 city, a lot of families that might like to see a soccer game cant because Dad works the swing shift and Mom is on graveyard shift. Also, and this might be the most damning evidence against an MLS team in LV, I have seen first hand that the LV community might seem like they would support soccer, but in reality does not. I played from 2001-2004 at UNLV. It's a D-1 program, and we had some pretty good teams during that time. My sophomore year we went 8-0-0 at home(including a 6-1 win vs defending national champs UConn). If you wanted to see a quality game of soccer where your home team won, it was pretty much a guarantee that year. We had all sorts of programs for local kids. We ran summer camps, went out to local youth leagues, and even offered free admission for any child wearing their team's jersey. On top of that adult tickets were only $6 or so. We still could only muster ~800 people per game. If we broke the 1000 person attendance mark it was a big deal.

Well from the sounds of it Vegas is the #1 choice. I'm not even sure if Atlanta would support a team honestly. We don't really support the Silverbacks.

Myself and a whole lot of my friends would be first in line for season tickets. I just hope the rest of the community(or at least a significant enough portion of it) would do the same.

See yeah that's a big issue I've argued about on bigsoccer.com. Problem is a lot of people assume they know how Vegas works even though they've never been off the strip... either that or they assume it's like every other 2mil+ metropolitan area.

Don't get me wrong, I'd looooooove to support a Nevada club. But here are my arguments as to why I don't think it would work:

- Transient population
- Majority of locals don't care what's happening on the strip and typically avoid it like the plague
- Where's the parking going to go? Do they think all of the business behind the proposed lot are going to want to sell their land? And would the owner be able to afford that on top of construction and league fees?
- The casinos don't want something else taking their business. Locals don't gamble (typically) and so it wouldn't be a draw for the casinos. And tourists probably won't want to see a team they don't care about unless they are there specifically for a match

But there are a couple things in their favor:
- Good soccer subculture in the metropolitan area (LV, NVL, Henderson, Boulder, GV, Summerlin, etc)
- Large population (but seriously, I don't think there's a big enough market for 36k stadium)
- Nevada needs jobs like Sepp Blatter needs a kick in the teeth

I am stoked! I love that it is on Fox, national TV - especially on my 98" high def projector!!! Vamos Barca!

Going to be at my nephews 4th birthday so I won't be able to watch it on TV. Thank Jebus for smartphones with full-flash capabilities!

That really threw me, I was looking on fox soccer to record it and found pregame and postgame and was really confused. Didn't even fathom that it would be on network fox. Cool that it is, tho! Gotta disagree with you on the vamos barca, tho. :D

Excellent match. Wasn't the result I was expecting but Barca looked stellar (well, they both did... but obviously Barca more so :D)

Also, did anybody watch the Philadelphia Union @ Toronto FC match?! 6-2  good-f**king-gravy!

The Reds have been having a rough season... it actually makes me feel sorry for the supporters. I know if I were in the same situation I would never stop bleeding Blue, White and Gold for LA but it would be a little heartbreaking.

WOO! Really glad my Galaxy pulled it out. Fantastic stoppage-time goal-line defense by AJ DeLagarza and (surprisingly) Landy Cakes.

But I was watching the highlights from last night and just wanted to point out to the nay-sayers that MLS can play some beautiful soccer:

Yanks news:

In lieu of Benny Feilhaber potentially being injured (he's being examined still as we speak) Bob Bradley has given a temporary call-up to Alejandro Bedoya. If I remember correctly, Bedoya helped out quite a bit in the 2009 Confederations Cup.

I hope Benny will be all right. You hate to see a talented Yank go down, especially due to sh!tty-ass turf at Gillette Stadium

That was a nice goal. Columbus (my team) scored one earlier this year on a 17 pass possession.

Indeed. But also, just this weekend, Ekpo had a stellar goal off of a great individual effort in the area. Strong player, that one!

Got to see half of US-Spain at Gillette stadium yesterday. Would have caught the whole game, but it took 90 minutes to drive the last 3 miles into the stadium. Apparently they decided that with only 64,000 tickets sold, no buses needed to run from the Boston terminals.

Honestly, I had more fun kicking the ball around for 2 hours after the game while waiting for the lot to clear out, but it was cool to see Torres score live. Heck, I have that on most Chelsea fans this year ;-)

JOZY ALTIDORE GOAL off a beautiful pass from Landy Cakes.

Yanks up over Canada, 1-0.

We've got this Gold Cup in the bag :D

WOO!!! 2-0

Altidore cross to Clint Dempsey to put it away in the back post. Gorgeous.

What a match. USMNT looking fantastic. I hope sooo much it's Yanks vs El Tri in the final!

I agree with Chris Sullivan, the Panama game is going to be tougher for the USMNT than Canada was - did you see the highlights from the Jamaica game? 5 goals!

I'm gonna say that I hope someone puts away Mexico before we make it to the finals. Chicha is not a guy I want to see going up against our rickety D-line.

You know I was actually quite happy with the performance of the backs. It's weird not seeing The Gooch in there but they really stepped up. Tim Ream looks more comfortable.

OH, and how about that midfield? Pass after pass after pass after pass after pass.......... you get my point. Possession was key and it looked like Canada was saying, "Can we please have our ball back, Mister?" That and I feel like Jozy and Juan are starting to feel more comfortable together and can do more with feeds from our (IMHO) excellent midfield.

EDIT: Also forgot, MOTHER F***ING CHERUNDALO! Dude was all over the place. He must have made 7 or 8 crosses into the box after a long run up the line. And lemme tell you abut his off-balls runs: overlapping, give and goes, setting up triangles.... he looked great.

^^^ then I'll quote myself, too ;) I'm with you, after not being able to create credible scoring threats against Panama for most of the game, I would be concerned about facing Mexico, because they will score on the USA, I'm afraid.

Also, my son worked the two games at Soldier Field in Chicago yesterday (Cuba v. El Salvador, Mexico v. Costa Rica). He helped with media relations and spent most of the games on the sidelines, making sure the still photographers stayed in their area and had what they needed. He had a great time.
