Are there any higher-end audio stores in your area? I went with a friend to one in SF once and it was a great experience. We were able to demo a number of different components on their systems.

There is one spot that I'm aware of.

But all the research I've done, tables are either in the $100-$200 range, $400-$500 or $800+. I'm looking to be firmly in the $400-$500 range.

Or are you talking used?

Still trying to get the hang of this photography thing. My space is weird and I need a better stereo cabinet - the one I'm using right now is basically a placeholder.

If we're using this thread to get stereo upgrade suggestions, I'm looking to upgrade my speakers and amp. I have a much nicer turntable than the rest of my setup (I lucked into it), so I'm not looking for audiophile-level stuff. I'm looking for some decent vintage mid-level stuff, so if anyone has suggestions, I'll take whatever I can get.

Man, I ******* love The Bird and the Worm. Tried listening to their other stuff and none of it really clicked with me. Still, great song.
Great song, great album. I do enjoy their self titled album. Other than that, meh.

All this platter chatter...

My wife and I have an agreement. We are currently dieting and exercising and when we hit our target weight, we get a predetermined, pre-approved guilt-free purchase. Mine is a turntable upgrade. Been wanting to move the ATLP60 out to the porch for outdoor enjoyment anyway...

Any suggestions in the ~$500 range. Looking at primarily the next standard tier up of the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon and Rega RP1. If those are truly the best options in this price range, which is preferable? Major differences? Looks like they get similar reviews with similar functionality. Any other options I should be considering?
Have to be new? $500 could get you a well sorted SL-1200. Hard to beat Technics at their peak. Thorens is also a good option. I've always been of the opinion that vintage is better then new in that price range.

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon vs Rega RP1.

Both are similar, with high tone arm stiffness and a low mass plinth. This makes for a noisy table, but gives that extra “jump” when playing music. Sometimes high mass plinths sound a bit dead to me. I’m a Rega man myself.

Can you find a used RP3? If so, it might be worth getting that one. It sounds great. You can also slowly upgrade its parts over time. A modded RP3 sounds fantastic.
