Most people I know, including myself basically exclusively use the Ikea "Kallax" unit. Sturdy, and comes in various sizes and colors. I love to see peoples storage that's more unique, but often some of those options are less stable. Though, I have seen some great unique shelving options.
We went to Ikea and were ready to get a kallax, besta combination. Functionally, it's hard to beat kallax. I just feel at this point in my life I'd like to avoid flatpack furniture. However, we looked at 8 furniture stores the other day and we found 1 TV cabinet we actually liked but the color wouldn't work in our living room.
After years of searching, hoping to avoid Ikea, I finally managed to find something on craigslist that was unique, affordable and met all my needs.
quirk6 - I would suggest staying patient until you find something you're truly happy about rather than forcing it.
Patience is probably the way to go. I was shopping now because my wife got a bonus and we have some good money to shop for it right now, but I'd rather now compromise. If I'm going to spend the money it should be on something I really like. The second good advice in there is craigslist, I didn't think to look there.
If money wasn’t a issue I’d jump on these in a heart beat.

Combines everything I love aesthetically with the feel I love with digging in a shop.
If money weren't an issue there are lots of mid-century modern pieces out there I could spend thousands on.
