so ive had my first brew fermetining for 6 days and the airlock has stopped bubbling. im gonna leave it for at least another week in primary.its about a 6% abv partial extract ipa.i plan on dry hopping in secondary also.my stick on primary has been about 67 and gradually dropping as fermentation slows down.right now its 63,same as ambiant temp. im just confused if i should be keeping it warmer or not.im not exactly sure when to cold crash. i know the yeast needs more time to cleanup.my temps might have been a little high but i was having a hard time regulating temps with a blanket.im probably just worrying becase it is my first one.any advice you can give me about temperature and length of time i would appreciate it.thanks

I like to make sure it's at the final grav. for a couple days before I cold crash to give the yeast time to clean up fermentation by products. I also like to dry hop after cold crashing. Fermentation is exothermic so it's good that you've been paying attention to the little details during your first beer so you know what to expect. You're going in the right direction. Don't worry.

so do you think i should keep it at 63 where it is at or should it be a little warmer while they finish there business.next batch will be in a swamp cooler so i dont have to be so paranoid.i love this though.its a lot of fun constantly monitoring it

If it gets a little warmer it will give the yeast a chance to do it's work faster. My experience with english yeast has me doing the primary/secondary about 65-68. If the temp is available via a warm room or my fermenter is open I like to give it a week or two at about 72. Takes care of the diacetyl faster. But it depends on the strain. I use 1028 from Wyeast.

I think you're fine. You're definitely in the right range. Being warmer wouldn't hurt anything, but the yeast will be perfectly happy to go about their business at 62. That's where I ferment all of my ales.

im using safale 05.i can easily keep it at 65-68 but 72 might be harder to achieve without a heating device.im in no rush so i will keep it in that range.i was thinking primary for 3 weeks total. that should be plenty of time to finish

awesome so ill keep it about 63-65 for the rest of primary.i def. feel a little more at ease about it but that could also be from the dead guy ale im drinking now. thanks for the help. this is such a great forum. ive learned alot just by trolling.im sure ill have more questions.this is just week one of my new brewing life
