My wife has noticed on the boards here how guys all refer to their wives as girlfriends as SWMBO, and I explained to her that it means She Who Must Be Obeyed. She did not like this, and instructed me that I am never to refer to her as SWMBO. But... if I obey her in this directive and refrain from calling her SWMBO, what does that make her?

It's a SWMBO catch-22.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

So...does this mean your wife brews with you and has an interest in learning from the board (which is a win), or is she being nosy and reading over your shoulder?
The latter, not the former. She literally doesn't want to be in the house when I brew. That said, she does support my habit, even though she doesn't like it. That's how I know she loves me.

If she doesnt like the term and is INSTRUCTING you to stop using it, sounds like a total SWMBO to me.

Once I explained that the phonetic similarity to "bimbo" was entirely coincidental and the whole term is really out of endearment, she didnt care

I guess it's possible. She must go somewhere when I brew. Also, she says she works three jobs, but maybe she's just going to Chicago every day. Hmm... is this why she's like the only Cubs fan in Maine?

Funny. I guess I should have paid attention to your location before I posted that comment. :mug:

Ahhhh the double edge sword! If I OBEY her it means she is truly a SWMBO. Just like a SWMBO..... Ohhhhhh the conundrum...

MAN YOUR SCREWED! TOSS IN THE TOWEL! I mean, if she says it's OK to toss in the towel, that is....:D:D:D

Cheers
Jay

Every home brewer has to a have a SWMBO (Or a HWMBO, for all the lady brewers) so either SHE has to be SWMBO, or you have to find somebody else to fill the role... Her call.

Same here.

Wifey buys me equipment. Recipe kits. Books. But has only ever tasted one home brew and has strictly forbidden me from trying to clone either of the 2 beers that she drinks.

In addition, I do things for her that I don't like. Like watching Katherine Heigl and Kate Hudson movies (whilst drinking homebrews, of course).

The Missus (she's okay with that, but not SWMBO) enjoys my brews, but gets stressed out by the process. Mostly she hates watching me move carboys or transfer into carboys or pick up carboys to sanitize them... come to think of it, maybe she's just afraid of carboys.

It's a valid concern, although with proper care and precautions, you can minimize the risks. Carboys can be fragile (particularly the cheaper, thinner ones from China), and are not as tolerant of rapid temperature changes as plastic fermenters. I.e, don't pour boiling hot wort directly into a room temperature carboy.

There are some precautions you can take that might help put your lady's mind at ease. For example, I ALWAYS wear thick leather work gloves, like these, whenever I'm handling a carboy (such as during cleaning, sanitizing, or harvesting yeast, etc.).

Additionally, I always have my carboys in a plastic milk crate when moving them.

Finally, I also use Brew Hauler straps when lifting carboys in and out of my fermentation chamber.

So on brew day, while wearing my gloves, I position the (empty) carboy into the Brew Hauler straps, then lift it into the milk crate. I can then move it around while filling it with the wort, then use the crate to carry the now-full carboy back downstairs to my fermentation chamber, where I use the straps to lift it out of the milk crate and into the chest freezer.

Perhaps adding these precautions to your inventory of brewing gear would help ease your better half's anxiety?

or go stainless - great excuse to switch to stainless! "Hey honey, this is SOOOO much safer..."

I now return you to the SWMBO Paradox

At least someone got to the point quick enough.

Agreed. In addition to insisting that you obey her request not to obey her, nosing around after your online presence is definitely SWMBOish.

You might also refer her to this delightful and enjoyable English television series about a barrister whose wife he refers to as She Who Must Be Obeyed. Charming, actually. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078680/
