I have been meaning to post this since I took them this summer. There is an old timer in my home town that has a small engine shop. Behind his shop is an amazing hop plant. He said he planted it about 20 years ago.
I took a handful and dried them down, but they smell like vegetables. I doubt it is a brewing variety. He is a great old guy and wants some beer made with the hops, but I doubt it would taste very good. I might brew a pale ale and toss in a few of his cones.
Do what I did (yes they smelled like tomato vines) and brew a 1/2 gallon batch to test the IBUs. The ones I tried (from a farmer, six pounds of them!) were around 4-5 alpha (my guess based on the hoppiness of the micro batch). They made a GREAT beer!. it was nothin but Marris otter extract and some 60L, but I hope the all-grain scale-up is half as good as the experiment. We'll see....
