Look for 21st Amendment products in cans, I believe they currently can an IPA and their Watermelon Wheat. Never had the latter, as it is always gone by the time I get to the beer fests.

Widmer sells everywhere, except Ok.

This is a great list. Thanks for putting so much time into it. I looked up a few of the Breweries and Russian River looks about my speed. :rockin: I'm probably going to go home and talk to my wife about making a trip to pick some up ASAP. I haven't finished looking at the rest but this is great and exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
:mug:

If you are going to Russian River Brewing, (which I think makes the worlds best hoppy beers), also do the tour or Lagunitas Brewing which is just down the road. They have a free tour every weekday at 3:00 PM which they don't advertise on their web site. They start you out at their private upstairs bar in the brewery and let you sample any beer they make. Then you get a brief tour of the facility. Their beer on tap at the brewery is really good. They even pour some of their experimental beer on occasion as well. Have fun!

My personal favorite breweries and best(IMHO) beers they make:

Sierra Nevada (kind of biased here :D)
-Torpedo IPA, Bigfoot, Celebration, Stout

North Coast Brewing Company
-Scrimshaw Pilsner, Old Stock Ale, La Merle, Brother Thelonius Abbey-style Ale

Lagunitas
-IPA, Brown Shugga', Maximus IPA

Rogue
-Dead Guy, Old Crustacean, Chipotle Ale (weird but good!)

Stone
-Arrogant Bastard, Double Bastard, Ruination IPA

Anderson Valley Brewing Co.
-Brother David's Dubble & Tripel, Hop Ottin' IPA, Boont Amber, Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema

Boundary Bay, Pike and Snoqualmie Falls are all great breweries. I've got to give some love to Coeur d'Alene brewing and Norther Lights (no official website that I can find). If your in Spokane these are worth visiting. Also, Harmon brewery in Tacoma is excellent. Oh yeah, can't forget Mac & Jacks. I just love west coast brews.

I lived in Spokane for a couple of years, but before I drank beer, I wish I got to try those places now.

Some that I haven't seen mentioned.

New Belgium Brewery:
Fat Tire, Tripel, 1554, Abbey Grand Cru

Hair of the Dog:
Fred from the wood, Doggie Claws, Adam

New Belgium's out on the east coast in Colorado

:D

Ok, it geography lesson time

I wouldn't call it West coast, but not East Coast either.

Speakeasy, SF
Marin Brewing, Larkspur
Moylans, Novato
Lagunitas, Petaluma
Russian River, Santa Rosa
Bear Republic, Healdsburg
Ace Cidery, Graton
Lost Coast
Feather River Brewery, Magalia
Fox Barrel Cidery, Auburn
Sudwerk, Davis
Ej Phair
21st Amendment, SF

Just to name a few that are smaller in my area, though growing.

I am not a 21st Amendment fan at all. The IPA is way too malty and the Watermelon Wheat reminds me of beer that people who don't like beer would like.

If you can get RR Supplication I'd suggest it. If the Pliny is FRESH, get it.

I'm glad someone mentioned Maritime, too. Their dark ale was a favorite up mine from up North.

Oh, and I've never been a Rogue fan, but I know a lot of people like them.

Why West Coast, might I ask? There's plenty of great beer in between coasts. You'd have an easier time finding good Midwest Beer nearby, ones that you could probably get by just crossing the state line. Munster, Indiana isn't THAT far from Pennsylvania...

Some great Midwest Breweries of the top of my head:

Three Floyd's
Founder's
Jolly Pumpkin
Bells'
Surly
New Glarus
Goose Island
Great Lakes

All world class breweries, and within spitting distance. Don't be a coastal snob.

my faves:

Boundary Bay
Russian River
Stone
Lagunitas
Port
Firestone
Bear Republic
Rogue

3F, Surly, New Glarus, Goose Island don't distribute out this way...and I am unsure about Great Lakes.

I've done a few road trips with SWMBO thru the west coast and many of my favs are listed here. But I can't believe no one has mentioned the Pelican Pub in Pacific City, Oregon. Absolutely outstanding beers and the best physical brewpub I've ever been to.

Pyramid too.

I think though that for absolute west coast style the other posts have been right. When I think west coast vs. east coast I think of the hoppier brews. Not saying that the lighter brews aren't good reps of each side too. The hoppier brews are done differently though. So for the big breweries stick with Stone, Russian River (not for size, but for the press it's getting right now and how it is a great rep of west coast IPA), Rogue, Firewalker and Sierra. There are other greats that we have all mentioned, but you are most likely to find these guys out there. If you find the others though, by all means.

I took a road trip a few weeks ago and that was one of our stops. They had some good beer but i did not care for their IPA at all.

I'm a big fan of Pelican too, but I don't think the East Coasters can sample their beer without visiting Oregon (or GABF).

I agree with just about all the breweries everyone has mentioned...The west coast is really known for their big hoppy beers, especially Stone beers. I was briefly looking over everyone else's responses and opinions but I didn't notice anyone mentioning Karl Strauss or Gordon Biersch. I know these breweries are strictly local to San Diego county, but just maybe they distribute to a select few beer stores on the east coast?? I'm just wondering how much Stone is actually in circulation out there...I figure their Pale Ale is their most widely sold beer out here so I'm wondering if even that is available in places like PA?

Karl Strauss is an SD company and they're pretty average. I think Gordon Biersch are not just local, but they're also kind of blah. If we're going to put our best forward, I'd rather give the best names, and not try to give the average selections.
