So I brewed up an Irish Red on Saturday and it went very well. Hit my mash temp within 2 F, got 75% efficiency (record), very good hot break (had to station a continuous boil over watch to operate the fan), but once the wort was almost chilled down to pitching temp I noticed clumps of junk in my wort. My first thought was that it was just a really good cold break, but I have never seen a cold break like that before. Has anyone ever seen a cold break like this (pics below) before?

Yep, exact same thing happened to one of mine. I have pictures back home if you want to see them, but you'll be fine. Those "clumps" are surprisingly loose, they fell right apart when I started whirlpooling.

never had two brews that the cold break looked exactly the same even using the same recipe.

like Reevy said the egg drop soup is cool

wildwest450 I gotta get a digital camera...anyway I had one similar to that not too long ago, except the break band was mid way up the carboy. There was trub on the bottom, but mid way up there was another solid band of creamy break material.

I suggest you all dump those batches, they're infected.

:)

I just put a bitter in primary last night that had planet-sized globs of protein all through the wort... even in the carboy, they're still suspended. Looks like some kind of solar-system diorama. :) I'm chalking it up to a mild hop, and 8 oz of flaked barley. :)
