With my 2nd batch(Midwest Porter) I decided to strain the wort as to reduce chances of the trub making further down the line. I picked up a 5 gallon painters strainer bag and first sanitized it then boiled it. Even though it was well sanitized should I not be using something that is not of food grade? I'm guessing my beer is fine but should I just let it be and autosiphon around it when transferring from primary to secondary?

I've found a few threads on this and it doesn't seem to be an issue but I had someone mention the non food grade bag to me and it got me thinking so I figured i'd ask the experts.

I think food grade is not the issue as much as sanitation. I tried using those screened funnels used for automotive paint, work good. They were easy enough to sanitize, but I won't use them again, got a bucket cover coming.
 
If sanitation is that big a concern, dip the strainer in Starsan before you pour through it. The Starsan won't do anything to your brew and it will give you the peace of mind that you're after.
 
Considering that I bought my first one from my LHBS, and the next one at the hardware store next door to me and they were the exact same brand...I don't worry about food grade or not...it's only coming in contact with our beer for a couple minutes max.

I soak mine in sanitizer before I use it though...and hand wash it thoroughly....
 
a newbie question (and sorry to hijack the thread)...

but do you strain when going from primary to secondary? or primary to bottle bucket...or from chilled wort to primary?
