Stout vs. Porter

Now I'm just curious as to what the exact difference between a stout and a porter is. The only thing I've seen really is that a stout typically has roasted barley in the recipe? Is that the only difference?
 
Pretty much. Check the BJCP style guidelines to get a better understanding of those styles and how they break down into sub categories.

In contrast with this roasted vs. black malt distinction, look at Sierra nevada's stout. There is no roasted barley. Go figure it's one of the examples of a classic beer within the BJCP style guidelines.
