Hey all,
1st,
I bought a Stir Plate and 2L flask and jumped right into making a yeast starter. I took a half cup of DME, boiled it for 30 min.
Cooled it down, then dumped it in the flask, some yeast food, water to the 1L line and the WYeast that I was using. I threw it on the stir plate and let it swirl for 2 days. Am I doing this right?

2nd,
I started to get bubbles out of the fermenter about 4 hours after I threw the yeast and and it was pretty crazy for a couple of days. Before using the stirred yeast I would let the fermenter sit for a min for 2 weeks. Can I reduce that time now that I have more yeast?

There's a high probability that it will ferment faster, but because your yeast is more healthy and there is a larger volume of it. Make sure you check it with a hydrometer.

I'm not sure you really need to stir it for 2 days. Pretty sure the pack of yeast you pitch into your starter will ferment through everything in your starter with in 24 hours. If I go multiple days it's only to let the yeast floc.

Thanks,

It stirred for 2 days only because I got my day mixed up on when I was going to brew, so it sat an extra day. I didn't think it would hurt anything.

In a lot of cases, the flask is made to fill with water (and DME) and heat on the stove. Boil it for about 10-15 minutes, cover it loosely with foil and stick it in the refrigerator until it's pitching temp (about an hour) and pitch.

Seriously folks. It's just beer. Don't make it too complicated.

Next time, you can spin it for one day, then stick it in the fridge to cold crash the starter for a day.
