I made a 1 ltr. starter last night. When I went to bed around 11pm, it was going nice with a small whirlpool in the middle of the flask. Now in the morning, the stir bar is spining but no whirlpool. Is this normal, does it mean its done or what. Not very experienced with stir plates. There is a nice layer of bubbly foam on the top though.

as long as the stir plate is keeping the yeast from settling out, it`s doing its job.

The foam on top prevents air from being drawn down into the vortex like it was before you got krausen. It is fine, don't even really need much of a vortex, just want to keep that yeast off the bottom.
