I just got a stir plate to make yeast starters. The picture tutorial in another thread is good for starters but how do I incorporate the plate in this? I'm planning on making a 2L starter with 2 smack packs of 2308 for a lager.

You make your starter, drop the stir bar in the flask and set the flask on the stir plate and turn it on;)

Adjust the speed until you see a small vortex and let it run.....18-24 hours and it will ferment out

Check out mrmalty and yeastcalc.com to find out about starters. You can do a step starter using only one Smackpack and save $$

As said make your wort, drop in the stirbar and set it on the stirplate. Turn it on and adjust the speed so there is a small vortex, it just needs to be a dime sized dimple on the surface. Run for 18-24 hours per step. Anything over 1 liter I chill and decant the liquid off the top.

Well I did my first yeast starter tonight....hopefully it works out. I used about 5 cups water with 1 cup DME. Boiled for 10 min then transferred to flask. Cooled in ice bath until 75 degrees. I used two smack packs of 2308 (as per mr malty). Swirled to mix then capped with foil and its on the stir plate.

perfect.... just make sure your tinfoil is loose enough for air to escape. O2 is your friend in this phase of yeast growth
