Saw instructions on building a stir plate. Question I have is to you have to use a flask to make your starters or can I use a 1 gal growler? Also; where does one buy a stir bar?

I've used a growler on a stir plate and it works reasonably well.

I much prefer the flasks because you can boil them on the stove and stick them in and ice bath without the glass cracking.

You can get a stirbar at a home brew shop or from a lab supply co. Also, ebay or amazon...

I have used the gallon jugs in the past, but have switched to flasks as they are much easier to get the bar to spin without throwing it. If you haven't bought the jug yet, make sure you look at all that are available and get the one with the flattest bottom. They're all different and some have a big dome in the middle.
