Steelhead?

I have tried running them a few different ways. Wacky rigged with a jig both under a float and drifting, rigged with a standard hook like a regular worm bottom bouncing, and in slower water on a 2 way rig with a fly. My best success with them was drifting them like a regular worm.

Went steelhead fishing today and nabbed my first spring chinook of the season.

Locals mostly Whynochee and humptulips sometimes if we feel up to it we go down to the Willipa or cowlitz

No I never have I wanna get around more fish all over the NW

When your done fishing the NW come east. 10 fish + days are not uncommon here. The guys here who have never been out west do not know how well we have it here.

Was an ok fall here in WNY. Hit and miss. This is a picture of my best fish this fall. Lake erie trib. Tried to keep her in the water the whole time for the picture but she kept flopping all over the place. Swam away fine to fight another day nonetheless. Have not been out yet this spring, still alot of shelf ice and what not. After it warms up a bit later in the spring we get a fanominal small mouth run here. Monster smallies can be as fun if not funner than the steelhead IMO.

Nice hen! I've done elk creek at the old hatchery a few times. My first experience with a #12 sucker spawn fly. Still can't believe they hit stuff that small.
Last time I was upstate we were using #18 crystal meth! Sheesh!

I just wanted to mention that one should look to the steelhead for motivation. It is but a lowly trout with aspirations to be a salmon, and so far almost reaching that goal.

I say it surpasses the Salmon in lore and the chase for 20+ is a goal that most do not achieve in a lifetime of fishing.

In my short lifetime of eating I would say that no freshwater fish looks or tastes so much like a salmon as the steelhead (Im not as big an angler as you are, so I go with what I know ) Of course, I know salmon spawns in fresh water and when caught during this time you are technically catching and eating a fresh water fish, but Im going to say that that doesnt count... erm... because I said so just now.

Steelhead is the same. They only return to freshwater to spawn.

I STILL think it is amusing that steelhead looks and tastes more salmony than it does trouty.

Oh its the best. Cuthroats are great also another searun trout that doesn't get as big as metalheads.

I love how it "flakes" when sauteed as well (again another thing that makes it more like salmon in my opinion). I'm sure there are probably steelhead purists out there who insist it should be grilled with a little butter and lemon, but I found it to be so meaty and full of body that it just begged to go into a pot of manhattan-style chowder.
