If you purchased the extract kit then your just supposed to steep the grains. Looks like a standard extract recipe using standard procedures.

im not sure but i think stouts have to ferment at a much lower temp then ales you might want to check into that or maybe someone else can chime in that knows better than me

Stouts are ales. The ideal fermentation temp is dictated by the yeast. If you pitched the WLP004 your optimum temp range is 65-68f, which is good for most ale yeasts.

I just brewed the AHB Dry Stout and it came with everything I needed. My kit was an extract, not mini mash or all grain, and I steeped my speciality grain, which came in a muslin bag pre crushed,@ 155º f for 15 min. The instructions are very thorough and they supply everything you should need. I highly recomend their kits.

However, my yeast arrived dead, wyeast smack pack, and I have heard that many people have complained of slow or dead yeast from them. I believe that this is just because it is summer and they are in a hot place as am I. I would suggest either the dry yeast from them or going to your LHBS and picking up the liquid yeast. I am still very new and am only on my first brew so I could be totally wrong about this. Good luck!

Does this kit require anything other than a grain bag and the normal extract supplies? It specifies a base grain and a specialty grain. Can I assume that both of those grains are simply steeped?

Yes, it is a basic kit that needs just a grain bag.

The grains are for simple steeping.

This is the best stout I have ever tasted. It is an award winning recipe that I created. All of the feedback I have received from customers is that I should make the beer available commercially.

Be careful because the Steamroller Stout is a 8% stout but it is hard to tell it is high alcohol. Its older brother Cannonball Stout is basically the same recipe but a 10% stout.

One nice feature about both of these stouts is that they are ready to drink early. The flavor does change over time, so you have one stout right away and another one once it has been aged.

Stouts are ales and can ferment at room temperature.

You should always have spare yeast on hand. Dry yeast will last 2 years.

We will give credit if you have a problem with a yeast. Just let us know and we will credit the amount of yeast on your next order. You have to give us specifics so we can get credit from the yeast manufacturer.

We ship over 12,000 liquid yeast a year and we have very few that fail. With these kind of numbers is likely the yeast had a problem before it left.

When liquid yeast is shipped from any homebrew store there will be some lag time.

Does the kit come with instructions to brew with? And, which yeast should I order. I would like to use a dry yeast if possible. This is my first brew and I think Dry yeast would be the easiest. If I should use the liquid, please let me know.

Thanks.

Dry or liquid would be fine. Stouts are all about the grain.
