I attempted to make a starter yeast.

1/2 cup DME, 2 cups boiling water for 15 min. Cooled, added to Mason jar, then added yeast (WLP029). I do not have a stir plate and made it at night....slept and went to work a full day before I could really shake it.

I used a ziplock bag over the opening with the Mason lid over bag...semi screwed on. I stored it at room temp (~84F).

It's been almost 48 hrs, but nothing appearing on the top of the liquid.

It go time...do I pull liquid yeast out of fridge or do I go with the starter?

How old was the yeast? After 48 hours something should have happened. I suspect it might have gone bad.

Based on my math (which likely is flawed) your starter had a original gravity of 1.045. You could always take a reading to see if that dropped. The challenge being that you don't have much liquid to get a reading with.

I have had one starter that did nothing. Not sure what happened to the yeast pack but it was only a few months old. I’m sure those yeasties fought like hell but what ever it was that got em was just too much. Poor little guys.

I’d grab a new pack of yeast.

Why the ziplock under the lid? I do mine in a flask and just put some foil over it.

Shake it a bit. If it foams up then CO2 is leaving the solution which means it's working. Otherwise, you may be out of luck.

I ended up going with new yeast packets. The yeast I used for starter was from Apr...which is why I wanted to try to starter. Good call on the bubbles...mine does have them.
The ziplock baggie was used because I didnt have any foil.

In the end, maybe it was a good starter, but didnt want to chance it.

I am going to let the starter go for another day to see what happens (education on my part).

Thanks all!
