Howdy all,

I'm getting ready to make a pale ale this Sunday so I got my starter going yesterday. This will be the second time I've done a starter. I was a bad father the first time and didn't really pay attention to how it was coming along so I'm not sure if this is normal. There is something on top of the krausen. Is that an infection?

I ferment in a bucket so I don't typically get a great view of the fermentation process.

I appreciate any help.

I thought so but just needed someone to talk me off the ledge. What is that dark particulate resting on top?

I'm not an expert by no means. I believe the brown stuff is yeast that's floating on the krasen. It's a good sign. No worries. Actually I wish the starter I'm making looked that good. I'm going to put off brewing till I can get a proper starter made.

Ahh gotcha. So in a full fermentation that would be the stuff that gets "top cropped" for yeast harvesting eh?
