I finally have my fermenter built. Do you guys usually wait for the blow off to finish before putting in the fermenter and would you suggest a piece of rigid foam on the bottom or a couple of 2X4 to help airflow on bottom of the 6gal Glass carboy i'm using. Attached is a pic of the chest freezer I converted for the fermenter.

You should put the carboy and blowoff rig in the fermentation chamber as soon as you pitch the yeast. During active blowoff your brew will be exothermic (it wants to warm up) and needs the fermentation chamber to keep the proper temp. You can rest the carboy directly on the bottom. You don't need to raise it up.

Personally for me the advantage of a FC would be the ability to lower your wort to your yeasts lowest working temp range in the initial stages of fermentation, therefor helping to eliminate most blow off issues in the first place..( Unless your going for some special yeast chariactor) .I am able to do this in winter without one and some batches don't even develop much of a Krausen at all..yet all ferment out completely. As I do ramp up the process to high 60's with a heat mat after most activity dwindles.
