stainless carbonation cap... supposed to look like this?

Just wanted to make sure -- the gasket on a stainless steel carbonation cap is supposed to do this, right? Fit on the inside rather than the top?

Mine doesn't do that - it stays inside the cap and seals to the rim.

Does it seal to the inside edge of the rim or the top edge? Is it possible to tell?

You can see the marks left in the gasket from the bottle rim, so I'm going with that.
I had forgotten how mine is constructed, it's pretty clear that gasket isn't going anywhere with the big hex nut against it...

The gasket on mine has an inner diameter that's too wide to be held in by the hex nut. It just arrived yesterday. Is it defective? Should I try to return it?

No, the gasket should sit on the top, between the rim of the bottle and the carbonation cap. But they do have a bit of a habit of slipping inside the bottle if you tighten them too much.

I find I can get a great seal at 30-40psi without having to tighten it too much. Mine is just a cheap AliExpress carbonation cap.

Also the gaskets are normally loose, not held in place by that hex nut. You need to be careful the gasket doesn't get lost when not connected to a bottle, as there's nothing holding them in place.

That is in fact an AliExpress cap, and if you look closely there's no way that gasket is slipping over the hex nut. And it never has.
Maybe they changed the gasket ID...

I think I've found it. I can feel it go fwump when the gasket dislodges. Doesn't need to be nearly as tight as I thought. Thanks for the input!

I am using Stainless Carbonation Cap with 5/16" Barb Ball Lock Type, and its cap spring is very strong that is made up of high quality materials.

I have the brewhardware cap with the barb and I've lost the gasket and need to find a replacement. Does anyone have a Grainger or McMaster link?
