Anyone using a Spunding Valve to naturally carbonate kegs? Can you please post your process?
Are you priming with corn sugar? using DME? saved wort or Kraeusening?

I'm trying to dial in my naturally carbonated kegs.
 
I transfer from my fermentation vessel to a fully purged keg when there is around 5 or less gravity points remaining. Put spunding valve on receiving keg and ferment to completion. This protects the beer because it is protected from oxidation by the actively fermenting beer.
 
ive been wanting to try this also, are you all using diy spunding valves or are you buying them already made?

I'm thinking about picking one pre-made up. They are like $30 these days.

I recommend the blowtie spunding valve. The diaphragm design is more accurate and reliable than the poppet style.
 
I just add 125 grams of sugar to the keg - no spunding valve. If carbonation is off, it is fixed after the first couple of pints. I have been admiring that blowtie valve though...

Wasted lots of time, money, effort, and unsatisfactory beer with other DIY and prebuilt products. Ths spring poppet valves are unreliable and hard to adjust, they also leak considerably. Brass fittings get corroded by the moisture and gas. Tried the Blow Tie and was instantly thrilled, now have three. Can't recommend highly enough.
 
I also do the keg with a few points to go, attach the blowtie. Sometimes my timing isn't good (vacations, etc) but even if only gets partially carbonated, I'm ahead of where I would have been.
 
+1 for Blowties. Cheap too. I've had blowoff and spills through both of mine and they still function perfectly.

I prefer to ferment in a keg (with an inch of dip tube cut off) with the blowtie attached near the end of the ferment. Either drink directly from the ferment keg or transfer to a serving keg. If using a normal fermenter, I use Iseneye's method (but will sometimes go with up to 10 points of gravity remaining). Just be aware that you do get a bit more sediment than normal doing it this way, so it's not so good if you're going to move the keg around.
 
Thanks, so my ideas were going to be:

1. Kraeusening with saved wort (or corn sugar if not available)

2. Add the spunding valve set to whatever PSI I need.

3. After 1-2 weeks take spunding valve off, hook up c02 just to push beer out.

I'm doing this with 2.5 gallon kegs and a portable c02 injector and cartridges. Hoping to lessen the amount of C02 I need to push out as well as get a better balance in the first 4-5 pulls.

I've tested one batch with the Kraeusen and it seemed to work great.

Anyone working with a similar process or setup?
