Has anyone taken a basic pale ale kit and done spruce tip additions near the end of the boil? I thought about giving it a try this spring to see how it turned out.

Yes, and it is very easy to overwhelm the beer with the spruce flavor, depending on your spruce source. Check out some of the other threads, there are quite a few (in the similar threads box below).

Here's another good thread with a lot of info: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/spruce-tips-popping-do-i-dare-60942/

I made a really nice spruce tip ale last year which wasn't overly sprucey. I found about 1oz of spruce tips per gallon 15 minutes from the end of the boil came out very nice.

Here's my recipe, it's a pretty basic all-grain pale ale.

3 gallons:

5lb 2-row
1lb Munich
.5lb Crystal 40

.35oz Magnum@60 (14.7%)
3.3oz Spruce Tips@15
Whirlfloc at 15
.5oz Cascade@10
.25oz Cascade@0 (when temp below 190)

Target Preboil: 1.040 - 4.5 Gal
Target OG: 1051 - 3.5 Gal
IBUs: 39.32 Tinseth
