I just purchased my first ball lock keg and the out(beer) side easily unscrewed for cleaning. But the in(gas) side won't come off. It looks different then the beer side and with all of my might with a wrench cannot unscrew it. What gives?

It's just stuck.

There's nothing different about the way it screws in to the corny.

The first time is often very tough. Try a bit of WD-40 to loosen things up.

Once you've got it freed and cleaned up, use a little but if keg lube on the threads to prevent galling in future.

Sometimes one side is a star looking nut(can't for the life of me think of the proper name). I use a combination wrench 7/8 I believe and use the proper side for the two different posts.

Agreed that it is just stuck. Maybe pouring very hot water on it might loosen it. A very long handled wrench for more leverage???

Yea it looks like a star like you said. I guess I need to work out more and drink less. Ha ha yea right like that will happen.

Yea I bought a cheap set of big combination wrenches from harbor freight and just use the 7/8 for my kegs and works great but almost all of them have the same setup as yours with a different gas post and I've got 6 right now.

You must have this tool from Sears. EdWort posted it. It opens both sizes of ball lock posts (there are 2), and will open both the liquid and gas sides. I walked into sears and bought it off the shelf. Couldn't live without it. Click the link for more info.

I just went out and picked up one of these wrenches this morning. I had been using deep sockets previously, but I really like this approach better. My local sears hardware had 2 on the shelf. Now they're down to 1.

I use a deep socket still instead of that combo wrench...I will probably upgrade one day, but I already had the socket set and it worked fine for me.

As far as the stuck star shaped post, I had the exact same thing happen the first time I took apart my "new" keg two weeks ago. I had to apply a LOT of force to get it to start turning. I was really worried it was broken or I was doing something wrong, but after checking around I kept at it. What actually worked in the end was tapping the socket handle with a rubber mallet. Even better, if you have it (I didn't) is to slide a length of metal pipe/tube over the end of the wrench, effectively lengtherning the handle. You can achieve ridiculous levels of torque doing that. That was the trick some guys showed me. They used that method to tighten up big ass lag bolts when installing deck railing. Mechanical advantage, for the win.

Ive got a deep star (12 pt) 7/8 that fits both sides of all my kegs so far (have not yet run into the smaller size)
