Houston is all non smoking I think. I don't smoke so I don't really pay attention. If they have good beer and good food I don't care.

The dead give away is if you know (and properly use) the difference between 'y' all' and 'all y'all'...

In Texas, do restaurants allow smoking and is it posted whether do or not? I refuse to go to bars or restraunts that allow smoking, and have walked into a few places that I didn't realize allowed it until I was already seated. I don't mind the funny looks when I get up and leave, but it is annoying.

Some cities (Austin, San Antonio) have no smoking anywhere. But in the non-progressive areas or in the non-urban areas, smoking is allowed most places I think.

I haven't had a problem in a restaurant, though. Only in places that you would consider a bar/pub/restaurant. Then, it's beyond bad.

Oh, yes, there are MANY great breweries in Texas. That's why it's frustrating that there isn't a decent selection at any bar, restaurant, or liquor store within 50 miles of us (or even more, as Houston is probably the closest place to the north- about 200 miles north). HEB has the best selection, but not many Texas breweries' selections, not even Rahr or Real Ale or even St. Arnold's. Near Austin, the picture totally changes, and I know Houston has several great places. Down south, though, a "good beer" is Dos Equis.

Well, you are almost in "Occupied Mexico" (south of the Nueces). :)

I know the Spec's liquor store in Dallas has a great selection and it seems they have stores in Corpus Christi - maybe worth a try.

Carry you to the store.
Wed usually take the truck though.

'Don't care for' got me a few times from the North Carolina side of the family. I don't see why you wouldn't care for it. Its just over to my brothers. I don't. Go on. Well I will. Fine then. I don't care for you to. why not? Damn it if you don't want to go just don't go. I do. I am. What's the problem? I don't know what your problem is. Grandma! Come help decide what we're talking about.

Yes, we may get to Corpus this year. If my brother-in-law flies in again, we'll be picking him up in Corpus- it's the closest decent sized airport. Otherwise, we rarely get there and never get to San Antonio.

I would also have to recommend Gabriel's on blanco and 1604. Have a great beer selection and they just started selling home brew supplies.

I remember back home in WVA that "you boys" was expressed as "you buoys",pronounced booies. Being southern baptist,it was always a little strange to me that drinking strong home made wine was ok, But goin out for some beers was frowned upon?...
And peanut butter was purchased in large tins & kept in the fridge. They figured it needed to be,since it was peanut butter...

My favorite favorite of favorite southern sayings was directed in reference to my ex-brother-in-law-or-would-have-been (they divorced before I married his ex-sister-in-law).

"That guy's like a yardsale. He's got two of everything but none of 'em matches"

I have no idea whatsoever what that means.

They advertised 14 taps. So, I'm thinking maybe one beer might be drinkable.

There's a place up the road, that advertises "54 taps!!!!!" Bud, Bud Lite, Coors, Coors Lite, Mich, Mich Lite, Miller, MIller Lite, Bud, Bud Lite, Coors, Coors Lite, Mich, Mich Lite, Miller, MIller Lite, Bud, Bud Lite, Coors, Coors Lite, Mich, Mich Lite, Miller, MIller Lite, Bud, Bud Lite, Coors, Coors Lite, Mich, Mich Lite, Miller, MIller Lite, Bud, Bud Lite, Coors, Coors Lite, Mich, Mich Lite, Miller, MIller Lite, Bud, Bud Lite, Coors, Coors Lite, Mich, Mich Lite, Miller, MIller Lite, Bud, Bud Lite, Coors, Coors Lite, Mich, Mich Lite, Miller, MIller Lite ...

You get the picture.

there are/were a lot of coon-asses in Gillette, Wy. I'd always hear, "Hey, man. Whyinch' y'all have nunna dangedol' chic'ry roun' here, man? You hear me cuz?" the lack of spaces was very intentional.

Being born and raised in NC, I'm always surprised the different terms my SC in-laws use. Two great examples - "might could" and "useta could."

I might could keg a red IPA tonight if I get off work a little early.

I useta could keg beer whenever I wanted back when I was in school.

Have you ever read the label on a bottle of Jero old fashioned mix? While it is made upstate NY they specifically call out Wisconsin folks.

No self respecting Wisconsinite uses old fashion mix, you make them from scratch. 'Cept for those folks up around Fall Crick, bless their hearts.

Big talk for for someone coming from a school system that has to co-op with a town that can't finish the word Elevator on their water tower.... Bless your heart... :)

Bob is all excited because a new BBQ/Beer Garden place opened this month, and he's hoping for good beer. They advertised 14 taps. So, I'm thinking maybe one beer might be drinkable.

(written in the spirit of this thread)

Don't be gettin too excited bout them there 14 taps. I been noticin alotta of places advertisin their places as havin lotsa taps and you show up to see all BMC. Regular and light BMC varieties can take up some tap space.

If you're stuck with few options, Negra Modelo is a passable vienna lager and most places have it.

I remember as a young boy ordering a "coke" at the Dairy Queen in town and being disappointed that they actually handed me a Coca Cola. They were supposed to ask what kind of coke.

Is it a Texas thing to ask for a kleenex instead of a tissue?

Well isn't that special....;)

But I'm actually from Strum, those Eleva folks are different...........

Y'all are fixing to crack me the hell up. I grew up in TN, and NC, and now in GA - it's funny hearing your perspectives. We use many of these phases every day without thinking about it. Here is a cute video called "**** southern women say," I even got a kick out of it!
