I have 10L oak barrel that I have used once for a Bourbon Barrel Porter. I wanted to do the recipe again but I wasn't sure that you can resue the barrel. I rinsed it out and flushed it out and the water smelled like really sour beer. Not a good smell!!
Is there any thing that I can do before I turn the barrel into a planter?

I've read here that most people put some bourbon back in the barrel. Rotate the barrel for a few days. Seems like a waist of good bourbon but I'm guessing it reconditions the barrel and kills what ever is making the sour smell. The only other way I can think of is to open the barrel and re-char it which is pert-near impossible unless your a barrel smith.
