I brewed up a all LME wheat a few weeks back.. It sat in the primary for about 3 weeks, then secondary for about a week. I bottled Friday I think and carbonation is coming along well. I opened 1 up today and just finished it. Really fruity tasting and when I burp it's like I have been drinking orange juice. Is this stuff safe to drink???

I didn't expect a wheat to come out so fruity tasting. Smells a bit fruity but not bad.

Absolutely your beer is safe to drink (probably). Beer that isn't safe is usually so vile you wouldn't even try it. However, it does seem likely that you've got a mild infection. It may deteriorate over time, so you should probably be careful.

I thought wheat beers didn't have to bottle condition for any length of time. Is it a wheat beer?

three to four weeks is really not that long of time when bottle conditioning. :)

depending on the yeast used as well, some wheats, or whits, or wiezens or white beers are rather fruity.

Yea it's a wheat.. It was a kit beer that came with my brew supplies..

I'll try letting it sit.. The way it tastes now it shouldn't be that hard to wait.. :D

I think I'm staying with darker beers for a while.. I'm not much of a wheat fan anyway. It's almost apricoty (new word??) for lack of a better reference. Hopefully it will disipate with time.

Thanks for the quick replys.. :rockin:

I agree with TexLaw and other posters. It's a wheat, give it some time. The wheat I brewed had a very strong banana aroma before it aged in the keg for a while. Now it's just pleasant.

No worries, I don't think you have an infection.

I'm thinking wheat beers are supposed to be fruity. Ever have a Hoegaarden? You should be able to find that around on draft anywhere that has a decent bar. Make sure you order it specifically without the lemon or orange wedge, and try it. Most wheat beers I like are really citrusy.

As far as being safe, it's fine. Unless you added raw meat to the secondary.

Wheat beers are supposed to be fruity, but if you don't like this, it will mellow somewhat with age. The type of yeast and the temp that it was fermented at will also play a role, but since you're already past that part, I think all you can do is wait ;)

Well the fruity taste only lasted about a week. Now I only have 6 of them left.. :drunk:

After that initial period of yucky they were really good. I don't drink wheats really at all, but I did like it.

Next time I'm hoping to have enough on-hand that I can let the wheat condition for a month or so..

Thanks for the answers gentlemen..
Brad
