Garlic powder and HOT Thai chili powder or high BTU cayenne pepper powder keeps almost everything away. I Buy it in bulk from the local "health food" store , if you open the jar and your eyes immediately water and your throat closes / you start coughing thats the stuff you want. I live in the woods and have deer / rabbits, coons in the yard all the time, they leave alone anything that I treat with my garlic & chili mix, everything else they mow to the ground.

Do you mix this chili/garlic mix with water and spray it directly on the plants?

I don't know anything about growing hops. However would Marigolds work to keep the critters out? I know rabbits and squirrel hate to be near them from when My mom was a gardner.

I had the same problem .. i was irate when i saw my rhizomes dug up and laying in the middle of my yard... but i know the culprit... those stupid effing squirles. My advice is to buy a pellet gun and eat them.

"Captain Lawrence" captains reserve double IPA how nice.. I frequent that brewery often.
Can not pass up the free tasting that Scott gives out. The beer is excellent and he always has the dead playing...
Where about are you located? I'm up in Poughquag in duchess...

I live in Danbury CT, and Scott is pretty awesome. He is highschool friends with the manager at the restaurant I work at, which is how I met him. I think his higher up beers are far better than his normal ones (DIPA vs Pale Ale for instance, DIPA is a supreme beer while the Pale Ale is just...good). I'm actually having another pint of the DIPA as I type this.

I hope it's not a squirrel. The damage looked a bit big for a squirrel to have done it, unless it was like the mothra of squirrels. If it is a squirrel, I'm in deep ****. Squirrels would just laugh as they climb up and into my caged in thunderdome hop area. =/

I dunno, looks like a lot of damage for some little critter, and the entire missing rhizome is a little suspicious.

Any of your neighbors build a trellis lately? ;)
The soil around the hole was very light & fluffy, leading me to believe it was done by paws and not hands, or a shovel. I am also unaware of any other homebrewers on the block, and I'm fairly certain my house has the most firearms, so I don't think anybody would want to come creeping into my hop garden. You never know though...I may have to get that ghillie suit after all.

EDIT: Yes, I am the multiquote master.

Have you seen the squirrels? It's been my experience that when a plant has been freshly dug up and chucked to the side, it's always a skunk.

I just came here to say 2 things...

1) sorry about your dug-up chinook; that hurts to see that void there. I even discussed your trellis idea with a coworker who came up with a similiar idea without reading HBT! You're getting another rhizome though, so here's to hoping that one flourishes. :mug:

2) i'm from the philly suburbs and had never heard of captain lawrence brewery...then I heard my girlfriend's pal (the gf is from Redding, CT) that we're visiting lives next door to "a guy who just started a small brewery"...we get to the girl's house, and sure enough, its on Captain Lawrence Drive... - visited the brewery later that night and bought a 750ml of Xtra Gold (an "aggressively hopped Belgian")...have high hopes for it but am still aging it in the closet...

No Jeff I Just dust the edges of my garden area & plants with the hot chili powder mix after every good rain storm. The critters around here aren't too stupid, after a hit or 2 of the pepper they pretty much leave everything alone. Never had any real bad bug problems in the gardens either.

Surrounding the area with dog hair works exceptionally well. You may laugh at this idea, but go down to your local dog groomer and ask for a big trash bag full of dog hair clippings and scatter the hair around your garden. The smell of predators scares most critters off. If you can specify get the hair of the un neutered males, aparently it is the most pungent.

I saw the picture of the hole and thought the same thing-human rodent!

Sorry too hear it got eaten. Damn things! I say you get the pellet gun out. I know if I see a rabbit rummaging though my hops I'm going too grab the 22. Lets hope the rest live a long life for you my friend. Cheers

This stuff is quite acidic, I wouldn't want it to burn the leaves. I'd just put a perimeter of stench around it. :)

So sorry for your loss. SWMBO said that there is no way that I could have a BBgun, so thats out of the question. I will have to stick with the mesh if squirrels start bothering my plants. On the Garlic/chili tip. Someone told me that if I covered the spot in my lawn that my dog loves to dig at with super hot chili powder that my dog would stop diggin....now her breath smells like chili's. Not to say it wouldnt work for other animals, but my choc. lab seems to love it :)

No BB gun? My kids have a couple each! My little one reminded me that we still needed to keep her working on her firearm training. She is all psyched to get a .22 cricket next year. We'll see.

There is always the live trap option! I like them cause you never know what you gonna get!

Most dogs love hot peppers. This is documented.

Great, there goes the pepper option. I have like 5,000 neighborhood dogs.

Any recommended brand of BB gun? I saw a rabbit the other day. Squirrels everywhere.

Motion activated claymores are effective. Just make sure that they are pointed away from your bines........;)

If you're actually seriously asking, the Gamo PT80 is a pretty awesome pellet / bb gun. Pellets are ideal for hunting (well, the hunting pellet ammo is anyway). If I remember correctly, it shoots pellets around 300 fps? I think? That'd be on a full Co2 cartridge anyway. I used to have one of these bad boys, it was pretty cool.

After you get one, put it's head on a stick as a warning to the others.

I was kind of joking, but the more I think about it, it could be fun. But I was thinking rifle, preferably one without a sight so I can use it for sight practice for skeet shooting...ultimately. But that's like two hobbies away...

Unless you're like a super marksman, skeet shooting with a rifle is like...impossible. You use shotguns for that. Also, the good BB / Pellet rifles are pump action, which gives critters a long time to get away. With a semi auto gun like the one I mentioned earlier, you can squeeze off probably 3 rounds before everything scrams.

Remington Genesis is a nice air rifle - 1000fps .177 about 180$

I like the Air Arms TX200 MkIII. Get the .22 Its pricey but it sure works on vermin around the house. I paid $350 for a used one,new is around $600

I have both of these guns and the MKIII is a much better gun.

I cant use the 22 with rat-shot or the shotgun around my house . Damn neighbors..lol

No, I'm a beginner. I was referring to a training exercise suggested in a book, using a BB gun to learn to line up quickly (at several stationary targets).

I think he just wants to hone his marksmanship like you said damn near impossible to skeet shot with a rifle.

If I were to go with an air rifle that wasnt a pump model I would buy the ShinSung 300 . These are charged with either a hand pump/scuba tank or electric pump to 3000psi. But they are pricey

Glad to see people are as serious about BB guns as they are their beer!

So I can't believe this has turned into a hunting thread. Here's a solution:
awesome2da0.jpg

With Jason Statham and a gun turret toting velociraptor guarding my hops I think I should be okay.

Go to your local pawn shop and buy a single shot .410. Pretty cheap. Pretty close range. And on rabbits, squirrels, and other little critters, pretty effective.
