Some stupid cop almost shot my dog last night

I'll always remember an article in the police blotter in my local paper.

"The police officer shot the cat that had been lying still in the middle of the road for at least two hours"

Yeah, I KNOW it was the humane thing to do, you gotta make sure.....Having said that, I know what the cops are like in my area, and he just HAD to let one go. No real comment, it was just so funny that I felt the need to share.

EXACTLY - I don't have a problem with a police officer, in a situation that he feels threatened, putting his hand on his gun when he is quite clear of his identity. Had I been armed and in my backyard and a person that refused to identify themselves displayed an aggressive maneuver towards a gun, be it directed at me or my contained dog, the situation would not have been as calm as this one ended.

Had he reached for his gun while saying "sir I am a plain clothes police officer, please take your dog inside." I would have INSTANTLY obeyed and gotten out of his way.


as an aside - I once had a cop in plain clothes cut me off in traffic and slam on his brakes, then get behind be and ride my ass because I passed him. I got scared, downshifted, and hauled ass out of there, only to have him run up to my car at a stoplight flashing his badge. I wish I coulda gotten the number to call his ass in.

Same thing happened to me once. Was on a busy interstate and this truck is weaving in an out behind me. He get's right up to me and starts tailgaiting the crap out of me. So I slow down to make a point.

When he finally passes he flashes some badge (I assume police badge) at me with a pissed off look on his face. I don't know if he was trying to get me pull over or what but I refused to. Eventually he just took off and I never saw him again.

I've been a Police Officer for 19yrs and the gun comes out when we are rushed by dogs, I've been attacked twice and shot two dogs but had my gun pulled out on 100's of them, the pepper spray we carry just pisses dogs off, the blend is good for humans but the dogs especially if in a protective mode it doesnt phase them. It broke my heart to shoot the dogs being an animal lover ( i generally prefer dogs over people LOL) but one almost turned me from a rooster to a hen real quick. My guess is this is what happened and think of it from our point of view, I for one was involved in an incident and saw a friend of mine get his head blown off before we were able to kill the bad guy. I'm on edge making an arrest in a dark alley preparing for the worst, I hear a door open and noise, now i have to take my eye off my suspect to see if his friend is going to ambush me from the door and I'm startled by a freakin horse of a dog, my ass puckers and the gun comes out, startled (I'm not saying its right but it happens under stress) I yell at you to get your F'ng dog in the house. You of course get mad because you dont deal with criminals everyday and dont understand why we are on edge after being shot at, assaulted, recovering guns in cars and on people everyday and also plain clothes cops have been shot by uniform cops even mistaking their identity. Sorry to be long winded but most people dont see it from our point of view on the streets especially in the Detroit area where I'm from. I am glad your dog was not harmed though and also agree some guys on the job don't deserve me sticking up for them, I wasn't there just giving an opinion from someone who is there more times then he wants to be. I don't have an opinion either way on cops. There are good ones trying to do a vital job and putting their ass on the line for it (for not much pay considering lawyers don't get shot at), and there are power-tripping bad cops. But this post brings up a common problem we dog owners (especially big dog owner's have), no one but you knows how docile Roover really is.

I have two big dogs. The Newfie would let anyone, Hitler included, in the house to rob us blind so long as the intruder showed him how to use the breadmaker. The other thinks guarding the house is his job and has a bit of a chip on his shoulder about it (I think its a german shepherd thing). Point is, when someone sees them for the first time, they are scared of both of them. There is no way a cop would know which one is nice and which one is naughty. They are both just big scary dogs.

Not to mention when the suspect lets the dog out to attack or just distract you so he can get a shot off.

I would suggest that you guys who are pissed off by this story go find your local "Citizens Police Academy" and sign up. After 12 weeks, you will have a whole new perspective on what it means to be a cop. Especially the shooting simulator. No, it's NOTHING like the simpleton "shoot the bad guy" arcade games that we get high score on with ease.

I love to make doughnut jokes as good as anyone, but the reality is that being a cop is a freakin hard job. You never know who's a good guy, who's a bad guy, who's armed, and who's not. You shoot the wrong guy, you're screwed. You DON'T shoot the right guy're screwed. You pull up and the situation is often chaotic, fast moving, and you've got just milliseconds to make a life or death decision...

Much respect to KENfromMI. I wouldn't have your job. But I'm very thankful that you (and a lot of other guys) wanna be cops...

i dont have a problem with the cop. I just didnt like how the guy handled it. I felt that it could have been handled alot differently. I know if the dog got shot the county wouldnt do anything. LOL

How?!? Just look at those teeth and all the damage she's done that room!!!

Seriously though, it's not the dog. It's the daily grind of being in combat and the training to keep you from getting killed....

I have been through the shooting simulators etc... and your right, they are very difficult situations...However, like I said, I can't fault the guy for going for his gun. For his own safety though, if you are going to make aggressive moves towards a weapon you better be damn sure that people know your a cop.

Screaming obscenities and orders at someone makes them more likely to think your some thug about to start shooting than it does that your a law enforcement officer trying to do his job.

I also agree and am thankful for the people out there that are busting their butts to try and keep the country safer because they love the job and the difference they can make. I am not so thankful for the people that think the world revolves around them and you better bow down when they walk by holding a badge.

Several years ago a cop came to my door. Before opening the Door I told the cop I needed to put the dog in a bedroom so the dog wouldn't come running out. After putting the dog in a front bedroom, I stepped outside to talk to him. He wanted to know about a car parked near my house(evidently abandoned). My windows have security bars on them with less than 6" between bars. My dog stuck his head through the curtains and started barking at us(Dresser was very vocal and I always encouraged it)and banging his head on the glass. The cop half pulled his gun when I told him that he had better save a couple if he shot at my dog. I made no move toward him to inflame the situation, but kept the very serious look on my face. I think at this point he realized the dog could not get past the bars and holstered his weapon. I relaxed, he relaxed, the dog kept barking until I turned and looked at him. He asked why I kept such a vicious animal. I went up to the window, and knocked. My beautiful blond haired, blued eyed 5 y.o. daughter poked her head through the curtains and Dresser started licking her from chin to forehead. "That is why" I replied. Was he vicious, hell no. But from the other side of a closed door he sounded like 180LBs of your worst nightmare.

I don't fault any cop the right to be prepared with a loose dog, no matter the size of the dog. If I was the cop the OP post I probably would have drawn also. I have seen far to many dogs with the ability to climb fences and even brick walls. and from the top of a wall or fence they have an impressive attack position.

If "I" was the cop, I would have my hand on the weapon also, but he should have immediately identified himself as a police officer if he was showing his weapon. No ifs and or buts on that one.
BTW, I'm not a COP but a few select drinking buddies of mine are.
