I want to make a smokey Scottish ale with oak chips. I want to soak the oak in scotch to sanitize. I know nothing about scotch, does anyone know of a reasonably cheap scotch that is a little smokey? I'm not using any peat so it's not going to be overly smokey. Thanks

Johnnie walker red. More recent bottlings have gotten pretty smokey and at a decent liquor store you can find a pint for less than 10 bucks

A little smoky? Try the Laphroaig 10 y.o.

Beat me to it, one of the most robust smoky flavored Scotches I've ever tried, and as far as scotches go, it's not crazy expensive. This is my normal sipping Scotch. Love the stuff! :D

I love Laphroiag and Ardbeg, but those aren't what I'd consider cheap. It's like drinking peat. I'd also like to know of a cheaper (blended?! Gasp!) smokey whisky.

One of my favorites as well. The most peaty, however peat is a very particular kind of smoky flavor. Not what you think of from wood smokiness. I think you may want to check out a few at a bar, even for smell before investing in a bottle. Maybe some airplane bottles? Smoked and also peated malts are available if you want a smoky flavor. A woman once told me my breath smelled like band aids after a glass of Laphroaig, which I don't agree with but understand her comparison.

Interestingly enough, the Laphroaig 10 y.o. is measured at having 25 ppm peat phenols. Most sherry-like scotchs (e.g., from the highlands) have somewhere around 3 to 4 ppm. The Ardbeg 10 y.o. has 35 ppm but seems less peaty due to a more well roundedness than the Laphroaig. My favorite is the Ardbeg Supernova, measured at about 120 ppm! They say the Bruichladdich Octomore has somewhere around 130 ppm. I have to try it! By the way, the supernova is my favorite; an absolutely great scotch! Almost a religious experience! :D
