I can't keep my nose out of my kit box :) i just love the smell. Yet, when i brewed my very first batch.. my wife and kids complained. I loved the smell of WORT in the air.. they said it was gross, and made them sick. Is it just me? Does it really smell that bad to others? it smells GREAT to me.

Yeah, I am beginning to think it's a guy thing, enjoying the smell. I used to think that it was the gear and DIY which makes homebrewing an overwhelming male thing, but I am shifting my opinion to think that it is also a major gender thing (Yooper, you want to weigh in here?) in regards to the smell. My wife and MIL can't stand it on brew day.

Why aren't there more women brewing? I live in Japan and I think that the economy of self brewing would really appeal to the housewife set here, but it hasn't taken off. Hmmm. What would it take to make brewing more appealing to women?

Well my wife and I both love the smell... As does my cousins wife. Actually my wife and I were in Seattle a couple weeks ago and after a morning of the pike place market with the kids thought we would get something to eat somewhere and lo and behold my wife says "it smells like hops". Holy cow. It smells like boiling wort in general! So we followed our noses quite literally and ended up at the pike brewing co. And had an amazing lunch and beer to boot!)

It's gotta be a love-it-or-hate-it thing. My wife wasn't keen on it, either. Although, she didn't find it repulsive. She just said it was really strong-smelling.

It's gotta be like when I took up trap and skeet shooting. I absolutely LOVE the smell of burnt gunpowder from my shot shells! It reminds me of what a great day it's been, outdoors, doing something fun. My wife? She's not much of a fan...

My girlfriend does not like the smell of hop oils boiling off...

but she sure enjoys the American Wheat I brewed while she "helped" :)

I will never boil inside again. I had a headache from the hops. Smelled great, but a bit strong. I do my boils outside now!

When brewing I am lucky enough to receive a "Mmmmm, Malty" in as close a Homer voice as a lady could acheive. Depends upon the person.

Then again I was rendering lard this weekend and thought the whole house smelled like "Mmmmm. bacon." Grossed her out to the point she had to leave.... Note to self....

I'm not a fan of the smell, either boiling or fermenting. It's too much for me, and I find it hard to believe that I'm going to drink that in a month. But alas, I do :)

I brewed a batch of double IPA on the weekend and the first thing I heard when my wife came is was "WHAT IS THAT SMELL" and with a big smill I said..."wonderfull hops" yum!

What would it take to make brewing more appealing to women?

I used the old line "it will save money in the long run" so that bought me some time. I may also move the boil outside once i get a turkey fryer, or some sort of propane burner.

Thanks for the replies, i needed some others input on this. now i know its not me,, or the wife.. some like it some dont.

My wife used to hate the smell but for some reason last week when I brewed my latest batch she came home and though I was cooking something delicious for dinner and loved how it smelled. Then again she's pregnant so maybe that has something to do with it.

Put me in the "I love the smell, she hates the smell" category. Next on the list to acquire is the turkey fryer so I can brew in the garage.

I like the smell,my wife said it smells like cookin. So we met somewhere in the middle, she even brews on occasion now. She's been quite the student...:rockin:

My lady is neutral. I don't think she likes it or hates it. I feel the same, honestly. I don't think it's a particularly inviting smell, but it still makes my mouth water with anticipation.
