So, being as this is my second brew I have a basic question to ask. What are the chances of contaminating my batch by siphoning. I used my mouth to prime the sanitized tube to get the wort from the kettle to the fermentor. Am I just being paranoid or do I run a risk of contamination doing it this way. The brew was a five gallon citrus blonde ale, thanks.

Yep its risky, Get an autosiphon
Guess you will find out soon enough if something bad happened

I did not have much problem with that a few years ago making wine so you may be ok this time

When I first brewed I had trouble priming the siphon I'm in full support of the auto siphon. My guess is if you pitched alot of yeast it will dominate any mouth germs and you'll be ok. I bought a tote from lowes and use it for sanitizing such things as autosiphons and tubing. It's pretty convenient.

So I guess the next question I would have is if I run the same risk siphoning into my bottling bucket. If the vodka tip is serious I guess mouth wash would work also then. Thanks.

I just bought an auto syphon it was 10 bucks no big deal but the other way I was shown which is very simple is when you have your tube attatched to the cane. Dip the whole tube into your sanatizer and plug the end with your finger and pull it out. The. Stick the cane in your beer and let it go into a glass to let off the sanatizer then put it in the bucket and you are good to go. I tried it works great. I looked it up on youtube. Sometimes I dont get it unless I can see someone else do it first.

Thanks, that sounds easy and simple enough for me to do as this is only my second batch.

Fill your siphon with sanitizer first, put one end in the primary, other end in a jar...open the siphon and when the beer flows through, move the siphon to the secondary vessel.

or, auto-siphon FTW

Cheap $1 turkey baster, use it to fill your tubing w/ sanitizer...keep full and place in beer to siphon. very easy.
