BTW, I just ran some math. If it took me only 15 more minutes per brew to do another sparge, that's 4.73 days I would have spent doing extra sparges over the course of my brewing. I would much rather spend that time with my wife, friends, dogs, etc.

LandoLincoln and billl: Thanks for the explanation. I'll be doing my first cooler mash tun batch this week, so I want to make sure I've checked everything.

By that rationalization, imagine all the time you would have saved if you hadn't sparged at all.

About another 4.73 days, since it takes me 15 min. to sparge. The difference, though, is that going from no sparge to one batch sparge gains me about 20-25% efficiency. To me, that's worth it. Spending the same amount of time for a 3% increase isn't.

And it just occurred to me...I could save more time and you could save more money IF WE DIDN'T HOMEBREW AT ALL! :)

You were the one that said "your time is worth more than money." Apparently your time is worth more than one pound of grain but less than let's say 6 pounds of grain.

I must not be making my point very well, so rather than keep beating this horse and boring everybody, I'll just say that what I'm getting at is that some tradeoffs are worth it and some aren't and everybody gets to decide for themselves. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump, "And that's all I've got to say about that".

This is worth repeating and emphasizing. It applies to all aspects of brewing, not just sparging.

Keep in mind that everyone's brew set up ups are different, so what might be easy for one person, might not be for another, and therefore XYZ might be worth it for the former, but not the latter
